Van Zant- BROTHER TO BROTHER- CD- 1998- SPV Recordings/SPV GmbH- 4001617189023- 400 grn
Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist, Johnny Van Zant, joined forces with brother Donnie Van Zant (founding member of .38 Special) to honor their late brother Ronnies memory. BROTHER TO BROTHER was created using Ronnies special blend of southern/blues rock that brought Lynyrd Skynyrd to legendary status. After a great response, the brothers followed up with Van Zant II, meeting all their fans expectations. Van Zant's 1998 release BROTHER TO BROTHER found the Van Zants right at home, with a Southern country-rock album in the tradition of bands like the Outlaws, the Marshall Tucker Band, and Molly Hatchet. Though it lacked the raw power of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers, it demonstrated how new millennium country music had broadened its appeal by melding with 1970s-era country rock. In a 1998 interview with The Tennessean, the Van Zants explained why BROTHER TO BROTHER was so warmly received in Nashville: "We've had people telling us forever and ever, ‘Man, you oughtta do something together,’" according to Johnny. "Actually, we wanted to do a country record at first," Donnie said. "And they laughed at us. … We were raised on country music."

Skynyrd vocalist Jonny Van Zant and his brother Donny pay homage to their late brother Ronnie with their emotional, gritty mix of rock, blues and heartfelt Southern boogie: BROTHER TO BROTHER, featuring into a close-knit, experienced backing band and soulful harmony singers, proudly continuing the tradition of southern rock. While .38 Special always had pure mainstream numbers on their best albums, the tone on BROTHER TO BROTHER is basically "southern", even if the melodic element sometimes dominates so much that you can hardly do without the addition "light". The fact that the opener 'Rage', which after a slow start blossoms into a thumper of classic Skynyrd design, and the great mid-tempo smasher 'Livin' A Lie' with plenty of earthy Confederate flavor can't change that - for the most part it's less hearty stuff like the mega-catchy title track, which offers the best southern kitsch and has what it takes to become an evergreen, 'Show Me' with its commercial chorus, the bluesy 'That Was Yesterday', which can also be found on a Joe Cocker record would do well, or the closing ballad 'Friend', which characterizes the image of this disc. It still like it very much. But if you liked the last Skynyrd and .38 albums mainly because they rocked like textbooks, you might want to give this a listen first.
