Jeff Beck And The Big Town Playboys- CRAZY LEGS: Limited Edition- CD- 1993/2012-
- Sony Music Entertainment/Friday Music- 829421535621- 400 grn
CRAZY LEGS is a studio album by Jeff Beck and the Big Town Playboys, released on 29 June 1993. The recording is an album of Gene Vincent songs. The album is considered to be a tribute to Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, and in particular to Vincent's early guitarist Cliff Gallup, who Beck recognized as his biggest influence. This album must have come as a shock to many Jeff Beck fans as it's completely unlike anything he'd previously recorded. As fellow Yardbird Jim McCarty stated, Jeff had (and has) a very broad range of musical influences. The band do a very good job of recreating the sound of those old Vincent records and Beck completely nails every aspect of Gallup's playing. The main reasons that I'd hesitate to recommend this album are: 1) unless you're a real rockabilly fan, 18 tracks is probably a bit too much of a good thing [and if you are a real rockabilly fan, you've most likely got the originals, anyway] and 2) Jeff re-recorded three of the best tracks, together with a lot of other great stuff, on his 2009 Rock And Roll Party album, which consider a far better choice.
PERSONNEL: Jeff Beck - lead guitars; Mike Sanchez - vocals, piano; Adrian Utley - rhythm guitar; Ian Jennings - upright bass, backing vocals; Clive Deamer - drums, backing vocals; Leo Green - tenor saxophone; Nick Lunt - baritone saxophone; Tony Rivers - backing vocals.
Jeff Beck has made many strange albums, but none were ever quite as strange as this. With the Big Town Playboys offering support, Beck rips through 18 Gene Vincent numbers (not "Be-Bop-A-Lula," however), paying tribute to Vincent's guitarist, Cliff Gallup. Beck sounds terrific as he reconstructs Gallup's parts, but he doesn't add anything to the originals. Still, CRAZY LEGS is a fun listen and offers many insights into Beck's playing, if not Gallup's. Although he found fame in The Yardbirds and made a name for himself in the 1970s as a jazz-fusion guitar god, Jeff Beck was the restless type and never stuck to any particular musical genre for more than a few albums. In the 80s he briefly went new wave before emerging as a blues rock legend again. After a bizarre ambient soundtrack collaboration with Jed Lieber titled Frankie’s House, Beck surprised the world again by releasing a cover album of rockabilly songs from the 1950s. This is one of those unadulterated tributes where the band doesn’t take any liberties to deviate from the originals not even a tiny bit making the album sound as if it were a legit recording mined from the 1950s. Likewise there are no clear indicators that this is a Jeff Beck album other than by name as Beck remains faithful to Gallup’s stylistic approach. Overall this is too faithful to be of much interest for Jeff Beck fans but albums like this are usually released to make the fans aware of an artist and not with the intent to outdo their primary influencers. As an album worth of rockabilly this is a decent album but not something would choose to listen to a second time. While love early rock and roll and rockabilly rather experience music from the actual era including an authentic Gene Vincent album rather than hear a cover band retread the past. Understand why Beck would want to cast a light on Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps considering they never experienced the popularity of other artists of the era however doubt even many Beck fans will lose any sleep if they sit this one out.
