Jeff Beck- THERE AND BACK- CD- 1980/1998- CBS Inc./Sony Music Entertainment Inc.- 5099749189324- 400 grn
THERE AND BACK is the fourth studio solo album by guitarist Jeff Beck, released in June 1980 through Epic Records. If you dig Jeff Beck's great fusion albums, Blow By Blow and Wired, respectively, you will appreciate THERE AND BACK as well. It doesn't hit the same heights as those albums but there's enough stellar playing and changes in pace to make this an enjoyable listen. As for the best tracks, "Space Boogie" is a killer and the playing by all involved is insane while "You Never Know" is a funk track that has great call and response between Jan Hammer's keyboards and Jeff's guitar leads. "Star Cycle" is a strong opener with a new wave feel thanks to Hammer's synths and electronic drums while "Too Much To Lose" is some more funk and more mid-tempo. "The Pump" is very memorable between Jeff's memorable guitar lines that value quality over quantity and its steady pace while "El Becko" begins with some impressive piano trills before diving into a driving rock fusion rhythm. The remaining tracks, "The Final Peace" and "The Golden Road", are also very good. While not top notch, THERE AND BACK is very good and is another strong album from Jeff Beck.
PERSONNEL: Jeff Beck – guitar, producer; Jan Hammer – keyboard, drums; Tony Hymas – keyboard; Simon Phillips – drums; Mo Foster – bass.
THERE AND BACK, Jeff Beck's first new studio album in four years, found him moving from old keyboard partner Jan Hammer (three tracks) to new one Tony Hymas (five), which turned out to be the difference between competition and support. Hence, the second side of this instrumental album is more engaging and less of a funk-fusion extravaganza than most of the first. If it were anybody else, you'd say that this was a transitional album, but this was the only studio album Beck released between 1976 and 1985, which makes it more like an unexpected Christmas letter from an old friend: "Everything's fine, still playing guitar."
