Stanley Clarke/Jeff Beck/Simon Philips- FREEWAY JAM- CD- 2017- Laser Media Production- 5584482055116- 300 grn
Jeff Beck ended his short tour of Japan with Stanley Clarke with three shows at the Budokan in Tokyo on November 30th, December 1st and December 2nd 1978. The set for this short partnership is a strange mixture of the Jan Hammer Group tour setlist with a couple of Clarke tunes thrown in for good measure. It starts off with the same Hammer written tone poem “Darkness” as a prelude to the brand new “Star Cycle,” also written by Hammer. Beck identifies it as a song that will be on the new album coming out in the following year. “Freeway Jam” sees Beck almost lost control in the middle and giving the lead to Clarke. “It gives me great pleasure to be back here at the Budokan. Thank you for coming to see us” Beck tells the audience before “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.” It had been more than five years since he played in Tokyo when he visited with Beck, Bogert & Appice in 1973. Clarke has his first spotlight during “School Days.” The short bass solo gives opportunity for the audience to clap along and join in the journey before Beck comes in with the melody, stretching the piece over ten minutes long. He also has an interesting run in “Scatterbrain” before Simon Phillips has his type-writer style drum solo in the middle of the piece. Afterwards, Clarke tells the audience “you know today, I learned how to count in Japanese” and does so before they start to play “Rock And Roll Jelly.”
PERSONNEL: Jeff Beck (guitar); Stanley Clarke (bass); Tony Hymas (keyboards); Simon Phillips (drums).
Especially for the highlight Nippon Budokan, the proficiency and accuracy increased, and on the second day of this Budokan, we arrived at the ensemble that will be the completed form of the 1978 Jeff Beck Group. It was such a monumental show, but the recording side did not quite go as expected with respect to the content. There have been many audience recordings so far, but none of them are good enough in terms of quality. While the splendor of the performance was well known, it did not lead to a live album that overwhelmed the sound alone. Unprecedentedly intense guitar play explodes, and it is in great shape from the beginning when it folds with “Star Cycle” and “Freeway Jam”. “Cat Moves”, which starts with a guitar riff, also heats up towards the second half. Master Stanley who shares the stage with Jeff is also wonderful. "School Days" and "Lopsy Lu", which continue if the solo is excellent and talkative, are also the best. In “Journey To Love”, which was included in the set from the Japan tour, colorful phrases dance wildly while scatting “la la la”. The 2nd day of the Nippon Budokan, which has a high reputation for performances even in the popular 1978 collection. It is a miraculous new excavation master that greatly updates its highest peak sound. There is also a tape change cut after the performance of “Diamond Dust” and “Rock 'n' Roll Jelly”, but they are all cheers between songs, and they have not missed a single sound. A cultural heritage-class live album that permanently preserves the masterpieces of the rare geniuses of Jeff and Stanley with the highest peak sound. Please take your time and enjoy.
