The title is misleading. You might be thinking it's Elton John's 16 hits featured here, but no. Instead, these are covers of big hits recorded when Elton John was still Reginald Dwight trying to figure a way up the popular music charts and willing to do anything to stay in the music business and away from a regular job. "Spirit In The Sky," "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," and "Travelin' Band" are among the tracks imitated. Makes for an interesting novelty. But definitely don't go looking here for the classic Elton John sound. This is better than expected - vintage early '70s Elton singing quality knock-off versions of quality hits of that time. There're a few tracks for which it isn't clear if or that it's him singing lead vocals (notably ''Up Around The Bend'' and ''Come And Get It''), but most of the songs feature his charismatic voice loud and clear with mostly decent instrumental support (and possibly his piano playing, although that couldn't be verified). Another pleasant surprise was the packaging for this type of compilation, which for once isn't some budget sleeve with a chronologically inaccurate picture of the artist. It's a substantial booklet that's well annotated by Tim Joseph, with lots of good information and an entertaining defense of the material. And he's got a point: if you like Elton John and/or orchestrated pop of that era, this is worth checking out at least once.

Есть вещи и менее известные, но и среди них встречаются крайне любопытные. Одна из самых сильных перепевок - "She Sold Me Magic" Лу Кристи. Еще крайне удались "Come And Get It" и "Cotton Fields". Пусть эта подборка интересна в первую очередь с исторической точки зрения, но слушать все это дело очень любопытно.
