Elton John- GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 – 2CD- 2002- Mercury Records Ltd.- 044006344928- 500 grn
GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 is a career-spanning compilation album of popular songs by English musician Elton John, released on UTV Records in 2002. It was certified Gold and Platinum in December 2002, Double Platinum in March 2003, Triple Platinum in August 2004, Four- and Five-times Platinum simultaneously in February 2011, and 6×Platinum in April 2016. There are very, very few artists with the hit power of Sir Elton check out this track listing! 34 tracks total! This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs From The West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 is a nearly flawless double-disc set commemorating Elton John's three-decade career. Disc one features what may arguably be John's most essential work: Seeing songs such as "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle In The Wind," and "Bennie And The Jets" [not to mention "Your Song," "Rocket Man," and "Tiny Dancer"] lined up back to back reaffirms just how diverse, and yet universal, his songwriting talent is. Disc two finds this talent maturing gracefully into the '80s, '90s, and beyond, touching on pop gems like "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," "I'm Still Standing," and "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" as well as his Lion King classic "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" and the Aida duet "Written In The Stars" with LeAnn Rimes. The collection also finds room for the highlights of his most recent albums, including Made In England's "Believe" and "Blessed," The Big Picture's "Something About The Way You Look Tonight," and Songs From The West Coast's "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore." For most casual fans, GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 will replace the need for collections such as Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, and Greatest Hits, Vol. 3, although these collections are still worthwhile as of-their-time retrospectives of John's work.
