THE BIG PICTURE is the twenty-fifth studio album by English musician Elton John, released in September 22, 1997. It includes four worldwide singles: "Live Like Horses" (a duet with Luciano Pavarotti only for the single version), "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" (released as a double A-side with "Candle In The Wind 1997"), "Recover Your Soul" and "If The River Can Bend". The album was recorded in 1997 with producer Chris Thomas at the helm, which would be the last album he has produced with John to date. The album’s release was preceded by the first single “Live Like Horses” that was released as a duet with Luciano Pavarotti, however for the studio album, the song features vocals only by Elton John. The second single “Something About The Way You Look Tonight” was re-released as a double A-Side single with the recording of “Candle In The Wind 1997” soon after the funeral of Princess Diana. This propelled the song to the top of singles charts globally and has since become the biggest selling single of all time. Two further singles were released from the album “Recover Your Soul” and “The River Can Bend”, the latter featuring a gospel choir in the choruses and at the closing stages of the song. There are some nice songs on the album with the moving “Long Way From Happiness”, the title track “The Big Picture”, “January” with a great string arrangement, and the punchy closing track “Wicked Dreams”.

THE BIG PICTURE finds Elton John in strong form, turning in a by-now-predictable collection of ballads and pop songs designed to appeal to the adult contemporary audience. The difference is inspiration. With Made In England, John and his collaborator Bernie Taupin showed signs of life, and they continue that winning streak here. There may be nothing new on THE BIG PICTURE, but it's well-crafted professional pop, demonstrating John's knack for catchy pop hooks and his way with a ballad. As with any latter-day John album, hits like "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" are balanced out by some filler, but the key to the album is how album tracks like "Recover Your Soul," "If The River Can Bend," and "The Big Picture" carry emotional and melodic weight. It's a solid effort from one of pop's most reliable artists.
