Elton John- VICTIM OF LOVE- CD- 1979/2003- Mercury Records Ltd.- 044007711620- 400 grn
VICTIM OF LOVE is the thirteenth studio album by English musician Elton John. It is a disco album, released in October 13, 1979 shortly after the peak of disco's popularity. It was not critically or commercially well-received, and is John's third lowest charting album to date in the US. At under 36 minutes, the album is the shortest of Elton John's career, and is atypical of his recording career in several respects. He neither wrote the songs nor played piano or keyboards, only providing the vocals. It was his first album without any of his original band members. It is also one of only two studio albums (along with A Single Man) without contributions from lyricist Bernie Taupin. When the album was released as a CD in the 1980s, the track breaks were incorrect. The first 45 seconds of "Spotlight" was part of the previous track, and similar errors occurred in other tracks. In 2003, the album was reissued in a digitally remastered format, with those problems corrected.
PERSONNEL: Elton John – lead and backing vocals; Thor Baldursson – keyboards, arrangements; Roy Davies – keyboards; Craig Snyder – lead guitar; Tim Cansfield – rhythm guitar; Steve Lukather – guitar solo; Marcus Miller – bass guitar; Keith Forsey – drums; Paulinho da Costa – percussion; Lenny Pickett – saxophone; Michael McDonald, Patrick Simmons, Stephanie Spruill, Julia Tillman Waters, Maxine Willard Waters – backing vocals.
Digitally remastered edition of the album that writer John Tobler describes in his sleeve notes as being "a somewhat unfortunate trip into Euro disco". Produced by Giorgio Moroder's long time collaborator, Pete Bellotte, all of the songs segue into each other as Elton wanted "to make a record to which discriminating night clubbers could dance". It was a project totally out of leftfield and came at one of the valleys of John's life, but the results are still part of the entire legend of the man and many have revisited this record to find what really makes him tick to complete the portrait of the artist. Although the title track was extracted as a single in the U.S. and the disgraceful cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" was issued as a 45 rpm in Europe, neither made much impact. In fact, with the exception of the Friends (1971) motion picture soundtrack [consisting of mostly instrumental incidental scoring] VICTIM OF LOVE was John's lowest charting album to date. Although on a temporary touring hiatus, once John returned to the road, he wisely chose not to incorporate any of the material from the project on-stage. In fact, contrasting the blatant sonic excess of this release, John was concurrently performing as a solo act, backed only by longtime percussionist Ray Cooper. This "unplugged" setting restored some of the good will between John and his audience that Victim of Love had disenfranchised. Thankfully, the artist (and the rest of the music world) abandoned disco as the 1970s turned into the 1980s. His next effort, 21 AT 33 (1980), allowed him to begin a long re-ascension on the music charts as well a restoration of his pop/rock leanings.
