ONE EYE TO MOROCCO is a solo studio album by English Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan. The album material was written during the gap of Deep Purple's 2008 World Tour, in the US. It was released on 6th March 2009 on Edel Records. As one of the most instantly recognizable voices in all of rock, there isn't much for Deep Purple's Ian Gillan to prove. Gillan has been the lead singer for Deep Purple on and off for four decades, but he’s been just as prolific outside of that high-visibility gig. An unexpected break found him with some extra time on his hands. The title, ONE EYE TO MOROCCO, is a euphemism for not concentrating on the matter at hand — while that notion might have been the initial inspiration, Gillan and his collaborators were anything but distracted when crafting the twelve songs that comprise the album. And while there are indeed some rockin' moments heard throughout ONE EYE TO MOROCCO, it won't be confused anytime soon with the heavy metal thunder of such early-'70s Purple releases as Fireball or Machine Head. That said, Gillan is still in fine voice, but musically, it's more mature and varied, as evidenced by The Beatles-like album opening title track, the Dire Straits-esque "Don't Stop", or the bluesy "Girl Goes To Show". Some hard rock vets have a hard time not coming off as trying too hard as they progress in years. As evidenced by ONE EYE TO MOROCCO, Ian Gillan is very comfortable where he's at.

Ian Gillan's album ONE EYE TO MOROCCO makes you think of another aging rock singer from the 70s, Robert Plant, whose latter-day solo albums have become softer, dare one say, introspective? This CD is somewhat linked to Gillan's late 90s album, Dreamcatcher, in both cases the artists seem to explore new musical roads, as if they were making an effort to stay away from their old bands... and Gillan succeeds at that on ONE EYE TO MOROCCO. There are a few rockers ala Rolling Stones on this album, such as "Texas State Of Mind" and "No Lotion For That", some pop rock, some reggae, some rhythm and blues, some fruity shower music, so to speak, and a very climactic ballad "It Would Be Nice", which happens to be one of the highlights along with "Always The Traveller". This record is ok for what it is, maybe Gillan did it on a whim, maybe it was a suggestion of the record company, maybe both, or probably none of the above. In the end this is just marginally better than Dreamcatcher with its Casio-generated drums. Though if you still prefer Mr. Plant's gerontic folk-y ramblings, they remind you of Led Zeppelin every now and again, but nothing from ONE EYE TO MOROCCO reminds you of Deep Purple, not even the worst Deep Purple with Steve Morse. ONE EYE TO MOROCCO is full of smart arrangements that underscore the album’s loosely unifying concept. Strangely, the more exotic-leaning songs tend to work better than the straight-ahead rockers — Deep Purple this is most definitely not. But even though he doesn’t stretch his voice to its Purple-proven limits, Gillan seems to know his limitations and strengths with equal intimacy, resulting in an album full of youthful longing that belies its creator’s 63 years of age.
