CHERKAZOO AND OTHER STORIES… is a compilation album comprising previously unreleased studio recordings by Ian Gillan from the early 1970s. The album was originally released in April 1992 on RPM in the UK. Further re-release came from Eagle Rock Enrertainment Plc on 22nd June 1998. The album is divided into two parts. The first eight tracks are taken from the soundtrack to CHERKAZOO, a children's story Gillan labored over circa 1972. Second part of the album features songs that were cut after Gillan's departure from Deep Purple, most likely circa 1974. CHERKAZOO was recorded from 1972 to 1974. Essentially a collection of demos recorded by Ian Gillan in the 70s. They’d been available as poor quality bootlegs for years until Gillan approved of them being released after being stored in his garden shed for the better part of two decades. Parts of this are demos he was working on with Dave Wintour on bass, Andy Steele on drums, and Bernie Holland on guitar. As perhaps the crowning glory in extensive Ian Gillan reissue series, CHERKAZOO AND OTHER STORIES… is at once both the most eagerly anticipated volume by hardcore fans and the lone disc in the series to appeal to a larger audience than Gillan fanatics. Nothing on the collection has been previously been released, yet it is all legendary among Deep Purple and Gillan followers. This items are equally sought-after among collectors, but outside listeners will undoubtedly be taken with CHERKAZOO AND OTHER STORIES…, a delightful collection of psychedelic pop and whimsical British music hall numbers.

The CHERKAZOO project began in 1969 after Glover famously told Gillan he’d never talk to him again until he wrote a song. Gillan began writing, if under duress, and eventually wrote so much material that Episode Six couldn’t record it all and he worked that creativity into CHERKAZOO. In 1971 Ian dropped mention of the work in an interview where he explained that he was working on the project and that it was “… an animal, space, musical, travelogue fantasy”. Gillan then decided he wanted to turn this project into an animated children’s cartoon. He wrote dialogue, characters, and developed the music with Glover’s help. He brought it to film companies to see who would be interested. It was mistakenly called CHEZ KAZOO. At the time it was assumed ''Monster In Paradise'' this was a leftover track that Deep Purple didn’t record and gave to the group. There were a number of odd versions with different singers doing cockney accents with spoken word bits. This was going to be left out until they uncovered this version featuring Glover on lead vocals with Gillan on the chorus. In liner notes state about of song ''The Bull Of Birantis'' that the strings were performed by members of Electric Light Orchestra. This wasn’t meant to recreate the CHERKAZOO project, merely to present a collection of Gillan’s demos. These are utterly charming songs and having all the appeal of the best obscure British psychedelia. High praise indeed. The early solo sessions find Gillan in more familiar territory, namely hard rock. There's more variety here than on Machine Head, yet it never sounds as contrived or forced as early Ian Gillan Band records occasionally do. All of the music on CHERKAZOO AND OTHER STORIES… makes a convincing case for Gillan's musical strengths. As a matter of fact, it's one of the most satisfying records in his catalog.
