THE GILLAN TAPES VOLUME 1 is a eighteen track compilation of rough mixes, demos, studio chat etc. was released on 6th October 1997 by Angel Air Records. Comments by madman John McCoy. John McCoy known to most Rock Music fans as the Big Bad Bald Bearded Bass Player with Gillan was also the Producer of all the Band's Hit Albums. This album is therefore compiled by him from the many hours of tapes he has from the numerous recording sessions undertaken by the band. The album includes three never released before tracks as well as totally different versions of all tracks featured. This is therefore a must for Gillan fans as none of the tracks featured on this album have been released before in their current format. Gillan fans will be enthralled to hear how some of their all time favourite tracks were first envisaged. The set is essential for any Gillan fan and fine insight for the casual listener.

This album is compiled and annotated by John McCoy, the bald and bearded bassist with Gillan and producer of all the band’s hit albums, from many hours of recording sessions. The album features three previously unreleased tracks while the remaining tracks have never been released before in this form. Generally impressed by this offering natch with Ian Gillan's screaming vocal Deep Purple springs to mind. They had plenty of hits in early 80's plus the classic Glory Road album. Still highly successful Gillan came to an abrupt end in January '83 surrounded by stories of rip offs, fake illness and a Deep Purple reunion only to find that Ian Gillan had shacked up with Black Sabbath. This album covers rough mixes & studio outakes of previously released material, plus three never before released tracks during the lifetime of the band and it generally works well. Gillan can take you from the arresting metal mayhem of ''Maelstrom'' and ''Bad News'' into the quiet and paradisiacal ''Fiji''. ''Restless'' in various mixes is probably the highlight. Of more interest to the fan and collector are the real one offs such as ''Come Tomorrow'', an instrumental version of ''Restless'' and the unfinished ''Smokin And Smowakin'' which leaves you wondering just how it might have sounded. By and large the quality remains consistently high. Probably a release for diehard fans and collectors but the music is superb nonetheless.
