Gillan- LIVE WEMBLEY 17th DECEMBER 1982- CD- 2004- Angel Air Records- 5055011701526- 400 grn
While Ian Gillan never truly caught on as a solo artist in the U.S., back home in his native England, he remained as popular as ever - able to sell out arenas and score hit albums. He was probably at his peak as a solo artist in 1982, as evidenced by the archival 2004 release, LIVE WEMBLEY 17th DECEMBER 1982. Gillan's group - which included future hyperactive Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers at the time - focused mostly on Gillan's solo material, including such standouts as the furiously rocking "What's The Matter" and the chunky "Bluesy Blue Sea." But Gillan is no fool, and knew that many of the diehards in the audience wanted their dose of Purple, which they received with readings of "Black Night" and "Smoke On The Water" - with a set-closing cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" added for good measure. Although understandably best known for his work with Purple and for a brief stint with Black Sabbath, Gillan's early-'80s solo releases - and especially LIVE WEMBLEY 17th DECEMBER 1982 - showed that the singer's desire to rock had never faded. Album was released on 19th January 2004.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan - Vocals; Colin Towns - Keyboards; Janick Gers - Guitars; John McCoy - Bass; Mick Underwood - Drums.
Subtitled THE END OF THE GLORY ROAD the previously unreleased last ever live concert by Gillan. Includes 20 page informative full-color book with rare photos from the band members' archives along with extensive liner notes. Features sixteen tracks including covers of ''Smoke On The Water'' and ''Helter Skelter''. On Angel Air Records gradually, special editions of various albums and live documents of the Gillan bands was published. After On The Rocks, the last concert with Bernie Torme on guitar, LIVE WEMBLEY 17th DECEMBER 1982 will be Gillan's band last concert. There are some pieces to be heard that have not been officially recorded live before. Two of the highlights: "Born To kill" from the Double Trouble album and "Black Night" from Deep Purple. There are also live rarities like "What's The Matter", "Bluesy Blue Sea" and "Hadely Bop Bop". The band is extraordinarily enthusiastic about playing, and you don't notice that it will be the last concert. Ian Gillan is vocally up to scratch, a condition that was not necessarily a matter of course at the time due to frequent vocal cord inflammation. Very nice, as almost always with Angel Air Records, the very detailed book, in which there is really something to read about the last months of the band and of course with numerous photos. Considering the concert was probably not originally planned for release, the quality is still good though. A very nice work that Angel Air Records have put together again. The songs, which were not previously available as live documents, justify the purchase. If you like listening to bands from the Deep Purple environment, you will not only get a great concert with the unmistakable Gillan sound, but also a small piece of lovingly presented rock history with the book.
