Gillan- MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION: GLASGOW 1982- CD- 2005- Angel Air Records- 5055011701847- 400 grn
In November 1982 Gillan had returned to Scotland for the third time in 12 months to sellout concerts. The line up on this CD had just released their 5th studio album Magic and were promoting it on what would ultimately be their last tour. This concert was recorded by Radio Clyde at Glasgow Apollo on 6th November 1982. The nine tracks from the Glasgow Apollo were a FM radio broadcast on Scotland's Radio Clyde. MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION: GLASGOW 1982 is a great live set from the Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan. Album was released on 15th August 2005 first time on CD and includes informative sleeve notes and two bonus tracks. Bonus tracks was recorded at Schwabinger Brau, Munich, Germany on 29th June 1981. You shouldn't go into this with top sound expectations and without a doubt you have to experience the time. Then you have a nice document from the last Gillan tour, because the following year Ian Gillan took over the job as singer for Black Sabbath. Mick Underwood reactivated his band Quartermass, John McCoy founded his own band McCOY, or Mammoth, Jannick Gers famously ended up in Iron Maiden and Colin Towns worked as a film and television music writer/musician.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan - Vocals; Colin Towns - Keyboards, Backing Vocals; John McCoy - Bass, Levitation; Mick Underwood - Drums, Percussion; Janick Gers - Guitar.
To waste many more words about Ian Gillan would probably be a complete waste of time, because any even remotely interested rock fan should know that this is one of the most gifted singers of all time, who has inspired and influenced other singers. After the release of Deep Purple's "Who Do We Think We Are" in 1973 and the subsequent separation from the rock giants, Gillan founded a solo band of the same name, which released their debut album Child In Time in 1976. Before he rejoined Deep Purple for Perfect Strangers in 1984, seven more Gillan albums saw the light of day, with Mr. Universe, Glory Road and Future Shock marking the highlights. When it came to live performances, Gillan was by no means one of the slackers, as the band regularly toured the UK. In 1982 a concert was recorded in Glasgow, which was released finding its way onto CD via Angel Air Records. There are nine songs on the regular part of MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION: GLASGOW 1982, including two Purple songs such as "Black Night" and "Smoke On The Water". Their own material comes across no less convincing. Here, too, Gillan knows how to set the tone and only offers above-average songs that are not far removed from Deep Purple in terms of style and class. Although the songs were created in different phases with different musicians, you can always tell that there were experts at work here, of whom Ian Gillan himself was certainly one of the greatest. There's really nothing to particularly highlight here because of the consistently high level, and if so, then one should only mention the good sound, which is indeed very good for a recording from 1982, even if one is certainly of a post-processing must be carried out. As bonus tracks there are two studio versions of the very successful "No Easy Way" and the twelve-minute "If You Believe Me", which is a little reminiscent of AC/DC's "The Jack" in its style and is the only track with that can't keep up with the rest of the song material. This is a really nice CD that Gillan/Deep Purple fans shouldn't miss.
