ON THE ROCKS is previously unreleased concert from Aachen, Germany was recorded on 17th June 1981. It only contains strong songs, mostly genuine material and now and then a well chosen ‘'oldie’' cover… Time flies when you’re enjoying yourself and that’s exactly how to describe this CD in a few words. Before you know it, it’s over. This live CD has a great sound quality and contains some great Classic Hard Rock in the Deep Purple style, so lots of Hammond and screaming vocals here and there, but the Gillan songs are also quite melodic. ON THE ROCKS was released on 20th August 2002 by Angel Air Records. The folks at Angel Air Records must be diehard Gillan fans because they’ve released more Gillan compilations, live performances, and CD’s from related band members than any other label. Gillan’s brand of punchy hard rock/old-school metal is well shown, and here the then-former Deep Purple vocalist led a set of blistering riffs, pounding rhythms and Colin Towns’ great, interweaving keyboards. The band play well, Gillan as always gives his all as only he can it is well produced and packaged and also includes a 16 page booklet featuring notes from More Than Purple editor Jerry Bloom and some rare unseen band member photos from their own personal collection. There is certainly nothing that gives the impression that the band was about to lose their guitarist. Of course, Bernie loved being the showman and how to tease the audience. His solo shows all of his different styles, before breaking into the riff ‘'Smoke On The Water'’. Gillan devotees should enjoy the whole set immensely. ''No Laughing In Heaven'' and the Deep Purple anthem ''Smoke On The Water'', are two of the energised highlights. This is a powerful live album and fans will be clamouring for this as none of the tracks have had an official release.

1981 was the time after the Ian Gillan Band, whose successor was only called Gillan. With the line-up it was well equipped and anything but a backing band for the great, then 35-year-old hard rock singer, whose merits were with the legendary MK II line-up Deep Purple had not faded away yet. The band was on tour in Europe and played in Aachen on June 17th, the last show where Irish guitarist Tormé was still on board. The gig was completely recorded except for the opener and released on CD. The tracklist offers nothing new. However, here in first-class sound quality and from a band and frontman who were in top form. Gillan brings a cross-section of all of the namesake's stations, as well as some covers in the encores, which have also been in the repertoire of the first generation hard rock singer for a long time. And here, in 1981, he shows that he is still singing at the top in the top league. The legendary vibrato, his trademark, is a bit strained, but still reaches the upper levels perfectly and the man presents himself as juicy and powerful. He's also extremely relaxed, as his humorous announcements show. Particular attention should be paid to Tormé's guitar work, but also Towns' excursions on the keyboards, both of whom, together with Ian Gillan, formed a lead triumvirate that offered everything that represented the genre at that point in time. The fans already know what a powerful powerhouse John McCoy and Mick Underwood were behind it. A real treat for fans of the great sound carriers, who get something really solid on their plate in every respect.
