GILLAN RE-ISSUE Series.
DOUBLE TROUBLE is the fifth studio album by the British hard rock band Gillan, released on 30th October 1981. It was released as a double album, the first disc containing studio material, and the second containing live recordings. In 1989, Virgin Records issued the album in CD format, with the same track listing. Even Ian Gillan was not sure about the sound of this album when he first heard the playback. Legend has it he threw it out of his car on the way home from the studio. There was an almost a punk/garage approach to the sound of those early Gillan albums. John McCoy’s production style was not going to get the band much airplay in the USA but in the UK they were in tune with the rawness. This was the first album to feature future Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers. Many people was not a fan as they just saw him as a Ritchie Blackmore clone. In 2007, Edsel Demon Music Group released the album with bonus material on two CD. Live tracks was recorded at Reading Festival on 22nd August 1980, at the Rainbow on 4th March 1981 and at Reading Festival on 29th August 1981. This is an exclusive limited edition 24-Bit digitally remastered twenty-track two-CD album set by the former Deep Purple frontman. There was a time in British rock history that Ian Gillan was not in Deep Purple. On leaving the Purps in '73 he set about a solo career as either Ian Gillan Band, or Gillan, or the delightfully named Garth Rockett & The Moonshiners. This is another CD from the Edsel Demon Music Group reissue series of Gillan albums.
COMPILATION INCLUDES:
CD1: STUDIO (includes bonus track);
CD2: LIVE (includes five bonus track).

Out had gone the wonderful Bernie Torme and in came Janick Gers from White Spirit. Many people thought he was Swedish, turns out he's from Hartlepool. This was the Golden period for Gillan, even though the album, nowhere near as good, still managed to spawn two singles in ''Restless'' and ''Nightmare''. The re-issue is reproduced as a 2CD set with added bonus tracks. The first is a eight studio tracks, the second CD is effectively a live set recorded at the Reading festival. ''Spanish Guitar'' on the studio CD, and five additional songs from the live set. Gers fitted into Torme's place seamlessly, with his widdly trickery trademark guitarwork suiting Gillan perfectly. DOUBLE TROUBLE opens with a massive statement of intent, a thunderous flurry of drums leading into the primeval ''I'll Rip Your Spine Out'', followed by the melodic first hit single ''Restless''. ''Men Of War'' is your typical Gillan ''screamer'' of a song, concluding with the key changing ''Life Goes On''. The three-part epic ''Born To Kill'' finishes things off. It starts with solo piano and just builds over threes parts. Each part becomes more powerful and then faster as the song reaches its climax. The song is 9.29 mins of sheer excellence. The live CD is the real treat here. Recording isn't perfect, proving its credentials, it only adds authenticity to the experience. The CD is an ideal reminder of what it was like to witness Gillan in full flight. Booklet again includes an intro by Gillan himself together with lyrics and an expansive notes section which you will enjoy. Edsel Records have given these re-issues the love and care they deserve. Truly an essential listen of one of the best exponents of rock in the 80's. If you are a fan of Ian Gillan this is an important part of his story.
