Angel Air Records released quite a few live-CDs of Gillan, and LIVE TOKYO OCTOBER 1978, SHINJUKU KOSEINENKIN HALL is one of them. This CD is a nice mixture of Gillan originals and Deep Purple tracks. No, it's not an officially recorded live show. and it isn't mastered from professionally recorded multi-tracks. However, it IS a very listenable example of the short-lived original Gillan lineup in concert. They play almost the entire debut album, as well as two Deep Purple classics. It's not something a casual fan would probably be interested in, but to the aficionado and serious collector, it's a gem. Gillan is in good voice and the band is on fire. Highlights are of course the Deep Purple tracks “Smoke On The Water” and “Child In Time”, but also some of the Gillan tracks are performed quite well, such as “I’m Your Man”, “Dead Of The Night” and “Tokyo Flight”. This release is one of the earliest recorded moments of the newly formed Gillan line-up, and issued the first time on CD on 18th September 2001 by Angel Air Records.

These live tracks capture the atmosphere of one of the live dates on the band’s 1978 jaunt to Japan. A new band built around keyboard player Colin Towns crashes through a set dominated by the latest album, Gillan, but finds room, too, for a couple of old Deep Purple chest-beaters. The band was still in transition, moving from the jazz of Ian Gillan Band into a much harder vein, and although the sound quality still leaves much to be desired, it again shows Ian in great voice. Ian Gillan is in great form, his vocals on the classic ‘'Child In Time'’ are awesome. Overall, a really good recording of the band’s mini-tour of Japan. In fact, it’s nearly comparable to a live Purple show. A real gem and a live set ''to die for''. One listen to this concert and you are left in no doubts that Ian Gillan had returned with all guns blazing with a band he chose simply to call Gillan. This recording proved to be the foundation for the very successful four year period that followed when GILLAN was No. One around the world. Previously unreleased concert recorded at Shinjuku Hall, the only known recording of this lineup featuring Colin Towns, John McCoy, Steve Byrd and Pete Barnacle. Great material and enjoyable sleeve notes make this album a top-notch effort. If you belong to the true Purple/Gillan fans, then don’t miss this interesting live gig.
