Uriah Heep- LIVE IN ARMENIA: Deluxe Edition- 2CD & DVD- 2011- Frontiers Records- 8024391052747- 700 grn
LIVE IN ARMENIA is a double live album by British rock group Uriah Heep, comprising a live 2CD set and corresponding DVD. It was released on 23rd September 2011 by Frontiers Records. In 2008, the venerable British hard rock band Uriah Heep released Wake The Sleeper, their first new studio album in ten years. Three years later Uriah Heep are heard on this concert recording playing seven of the selections from Wake The Sleeper out of fifteen songs in the show. Lead singer Bernie Shaw acknowledges that the set list is "a mixture of the old and the new", after announcing, "We've got Forty Years of Uriah Heep music". Nearly all the songs date back to the band's earliest days of the early '70s or come from Wake The Sleeper. The new songs audience reactionare tolerated, while old favorites like "Gypsy" and "July Morning" elicit howls of recognition and approval. Actually, there's nothing wrong with the Wake The Sleeper material, which is very much in the style of Uriah Heep's older catalog. It's just that those songs are not as familiar, especially, it seems, in Armenia, where the new album apparently wasn't even for sale legitimately. "Thank God for the black market", Bernie Shaw says at one point. The Uriah Heep of 2009 are an efficient unit largely made up of veterans who have been in the band for decades. Drummer Russell Gilbrook is a relatively newcomer who came on board in 2007, while guitarist Mick Box is the sole original member. They play the old songs effectively and the new songs with verve.
PERSONNEL: Mick Box – guitar, backing vocals; Trevor Bolder – bass guitar, backing vocals; Phil Lanzon – keyboards, backing vocals; Bernie Shaw – lead vocals; Russell Gilbrook – drums, backing vocals.
In October 2009 40th Anniversary, Uriah Heep released their Celebration: Forty Years Of Rock album, containing new studio recordings of their most successful, classic tracks, plus two brand new songs. This recording heralded an exciting new phase for the band. The band hit the road to celebrate forty years and opened new frontiers in Eastern Europe, Australia, South Africa, Japan and America. The band has played fifty three different countries in total. When the band was invited to play for the first time in Armenia, they did not think twice. At this rate Uriah Heep will soon become part of the geography syllabus. In the last three years they’ve issued live albums from Hungary, Austria, Sweden, Japan and Australia. And now Armenia where the president is apparently a fanatic. So, when the band agreed they were approached by TV and film crews to document this concert which shows an epic performance and an incredibly strong and powerful audience reaction. It’s interesting to hear vocalist Bernie Shaw chastise a patron for filming the concert, when the band are obviously recording the event for future release. Such is the life of musicians protecting their creative property in download times. What sets this album apart is the whacking chunk of tracks from their 2008 studio album Wake The Sleeper. That disc’s opening three tunes get this show underway with a rocking panache that lifts the dreaded ''heritage band'' tag off their shoulders, to the evident delight of singer Bernie Shaw. This comes at the expense of some Heep classics, but the Armenians also lap up the Zep-sounding ''Book Of Lies'', the proggy ''What Kind Of God'' and the Deep Purple-y ''Angels Walk With You''. The band never rely on backing tapes or piped in technology – it’s traditional, live instrumentation and the energy exchange between each musician to form an exhilarating hard rock stage show.
