WAKE THE SLEEPER is the 21st studio album by the rock band Uriah Heep, released on 2nd June 2008 in Europe and on 26th August 2008 in the United States. It is their first studio album since 1998's Sonic Origami. It is also their first album since 1980's Conquest without long-time drummer Lee Kerslake, who had to withdraw from the band due to ill health in 2007, putting an end to the band's longest-lasting lineup which existed for 21 years. WAKE THE SLEEPER is set to herald an exciting new phase for the band, taking their classic sound right into the future. The album see's Uriah Heep back to their very best and is set to become a future classic, sure, to please their dedicated worldwide fan base and fans of Progressive Rock in general. The sleeve illustration is a wonderfully atmospheric picture of a female deity by the Greek born artist Ioannis, who now lives in the USA. Ioannis has provided covers for many bands including King Crimson and Deep Purple. The photo of the band on the back of the booklet is equally atmospheric. Although Uriah Heep is known for its extensive personnel changes, its lineup has been stable since the mid-'80s. Unfortunately, that stability coincided with the band's commercial decline. So, no one outside the group's fan base noticed that the quintet remained in place through numerous world tours and the studio albums Raging Silence, Different World, Sea Of Light, and Sonic Origami. Since then, a series of live albums have testified to Uriah Heep's continued existence. WAKE THE SLEEPER finds the group attempting to reclaim its original glory.

There was a lot of hype surrounding this release, did it live up to it? Absolutely in spades. New drummer Russel Gilbrook seems to have energized the lads on this release. If you notice most of the tunes on this album were co-written by Mickey Box and Phil Lanzon, exactly the combo Heep needs, check out the organ and guitar drenched songs within. No mistake here as the early Heep was fuelled by guitar and organ. As good as Sonic Oragami and Sea Of Light were, and there wasn't a bad track on either, this album catchier and heavier. The album rocks, the first track can wake even dead ones. Upbeat and relentless with it's instrumental assult, "Wake The Sleeper" arrives like a frieght train with crashing drums and the raging wail of Box's guitar. This song alone rocks harder than most classic rock, and especially hard when compared to the music band's from the '70's put out today. Amazingly, the energy and intensity of this song is kept up through the entire album, with "Overload" and "Tears Of The World" following up the gauntlet thrown down by the opener. The band is playing wonderfully here, with Box cranking out heavy guitar jams and solos while Gilbrook's drums are strikingly good, in fact, the whole rhythm section is exceptional, helping turn somewhat ordinary hard-rock tunes into something special. Phil Lanzon's keys aren't given much to do beyond filling the background with organ tones, but the effect is one which brings back some of the old Heep sound. It's their finest since their also underrated masterpiece Abominog. Classic Rock magazine has rated this album very highly even putting it in the running for album of the year. No surprise once you've heard it. So if you love classic hard rock and Uriah Heep in particular pick this up album and witness a band slaying them. The lads have worked hard on this one and should be rewarded. Long live Heep! The sleeper is well and truly awake!
