EASY LIVIN’: THE SINGLES A’S & B’S is a compilation album by hard rock band Uriah Heep comprising almost all the band's singles, including several songs not available in the original albums. It was released on 24th October 2006 by Sanctuary Records. Two CD set featuring fourty three tracks, the singles, and a B-sides by this Heavy British Rock band, perhaps the finest introduction to their own musical world. This collection includes many rare single edits and non-album tracks, making it great for fans and perfect for those just starting their own Uriah Heep collections. EASY LIVIN’: THE SINGLES A’S & B’S is the Heep story, told by the singles from 1970-1989. Is a sprawling overview of Uriah Heep's golden era. Everything is on display here, the good, the bad and the ugly. The massive range of styles is both impressive and demonstrative. It clearly shows why they rocketed to popularity in the early '70's and why they fell back to earth as the decade came to a close. Following multiple style changes, constant personnel turnover and band infighting, Heep crashed and burned at the dawn of the 80's. They rose from ashes a few years later and this collection documents the first decade of their rebirth. While they've remained active to this day, they've never been able to reach the kind of success they did in the early 70's. Often referred to as a "poor man's Deep Purple", they shared the guitar/organ based riff style rock that Purple rode to international success. Heep was able to reach the upper tiers of stardom between 1971 and 1974, then slowly sank from sight. The first disc of this excellent collection demonstrates the strength of that early material, and a treasure trove of non-LP b-sides. Near the end of first CD, the change of vocalists is documented. Heep was already losing ground when Byron was fired, but the band never recovered from his departure.Lawton is a great singer, but he never really caught on with the public, particularly in the US and UK. The Lawton era is well represented through the first quarter of second CD, which also introduces Lawton's replacement, John Sloman. The Sloman era marked the death throes of the band and they collapsed in 1980. Founding member Mick Box resurrected the band with an entirely new line-up that included ex-Trapeze singer Pete Goalby. Their first album, Abominog, was very successful and the last time the band was to receive support from both the fans and the press. The songs presented here are great examples of their 80's rebirth and include album and EP tracks. But after three albums of decreasing success, Goalby left and the band splintered again. The last four tracks introduce the longest lasting line-up in Uriah Heep's history. Singer Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon came on board in the late 80's. Second CD closes with a live version of their 1971 classic, "Look At Yourself", recorded in Russia in 1988. The booklet contains photos of all their single sleeves and annotated notes on every track. The liner notes are extensive and give details on every song which is such an unexpected bonus. Very nice job and an essential release for fans of the band. Great comp though - you gotta love it, there’s so much unheard music here that deserves more exposure than they ever got. It’s amazing to wonder how many pretty damn decent albums the band could’ve culled from some of these brilliant and rockin’ B-sides? Two at least. We’ll never know. This is one to grab if you ever find it, and not only if you're a Heep fan. Treasures abound.
