SPELLBINDER LIVE was Uriah Heep's fourth official live album. It was released on 20th May 1996. Originally recorded in concert in Koln, Germany for broadcast on German radio in 1994 whilst the band were supporting the release of the Sea Of Light album. The album cover was painted by Paul Gregory, who had also designed among many other heavy metal classic album sleeves. SPELLBINDER was recorded by the now well established line-up. This version now features the studio bonus track ''Sail The Rivers''. Features unique live versions of Uriah Heep favourites ''Rainbow Demon'', ''The Wizard'', ''Gypsy'' and arguably their biggest hit, ''Easy Livin'''. SPELLBINDER LIVE, perhaps the best sounding of several concert discs in the group's mammoth discography. The record features plenty of old favorites. Considering the many wholesale lineup changes that occurred after David Byron exited the U.K. metal outfit, these '70s tracks are practically cover songs. But the performances, especially the lush vocal harmonies, are first-rate. Vocalist Bernie Shaw does a fine job with the old songs, but fans who have been around long enough to remember will miss David Byron's smooth delivery. A solid and professional set, SPELLBINDER LIVE is best suited for that tiny subset of fans who prefer the Shaw-era Uriah Heep to the more famous '70s outfit.

SPELLBINDER LIVE finds the now longest running Uriah Heep line up with a renewed confidence and sense of purpose. With a deal for a new studio album not yet concluded, this release was in reality a stopgap. Given the many other live albums already available, SPELLBINDER LIVE is somewhat superfluous, regardless of the quality of the music. The story goes that the gig, which was intended for a radio broadcast, was a disaster since much of the equipment malfunctioned including the stage monitors. Mick Box had however secured ownership of the tape of the gig, and when the band played it back a few weeks later, they were astonished to find that it "sounded great". The recording has therefore not been dubbed in any way. The set consists of a good cross section of new and old songs. Some of the older tracks, such as "Devil's Daughter" and "Rainbow Demon" had not been performed live for many years. Other old favourites, such as "Circle Of Hands", "Wizard", and "Look At Yourself" are included, all still sounding remarkably fresh. The fact that Bernie Shaw's vocal style bears a passing resemblance to David Byron's means that there is a warmly familiar feel to the performances of the Heep classics. Only a couple of tracks originally recorded by the current line up appear. While these are adequate they are greeted with polite rather than ecstatic appreciation. The album is rounded off by a studio track "Sail The Rivers", which was recorded during the sessions for the Sea Of Light album, but not included on it. This Trevor Boulder composition is rather prosaic, being neither an upbeat rocker or a ballad, but the lukewarm water in between. A decent, well rounded live album. Nice Wizard image artwork on the sleeve. Maybe not a lot of the newer tunes but all-in-all any time you get a good recording of Uriah Heep "live" it's worth it. The bonus studio track provides completists yet another reason to add this to their collection. Very good overall purchase.
