LIVE IN EUROPE 1979 is a live album by British rock band Uriah Heep, released on 30th June1986 on the Raw Power label. It was recorded live during their 1979 Fallen Angel Tour in England and Germany. LIVE IN EUROPE 1979 was remastered on double-disc expanded version, adding six more songs by Bronze Recordings in 2000 and reissue on 2CD with four previously unreleased bonus tracks by Sanctuary Records in 2006 and immediately strucked as crisp, tight, focused and strong. LIVE IN EUROPE 1979 splits its set list between the band's "classic" tracks and material from the three albums, Firefly, Innocent Victim, Fallen Angel, this lineup produced. Recalling that Uriah Heep were still stars in Europe, it was a logical venue for them. And here the band doesn't disappoint, putting a more energy into their recent work. For the most part the recording, done on The Rolling Stones Mobile, is more than adequate. The burning question for many is how John Lawton handles the Byron-era material, and the answer is "pretty well". Unable to reach the operatic heights of his predecessor, his "Gypsy" is something of a compromise, but he handles "The Wizard" and "Lady In Black" just fine. There are a couple of nice guitar solos from Mick Box, and a keyboard solo on "Sweet Lorraine", but no missing links to the puzzle.

By 1979, David Byron and Gary Thain had left the classic line up, being replaced by John Lawton and Trevor Boulder respectively. Audiences however still demanded to hear a good proportion of material from the band's Byron era albums, hence we have Lawton singing songs such as "Easy Livin'", "Look At Yourself", and "July Morning". Disc one is consistently strong, from a searing opener of "Look At Yourself" through to "July Morning". Mick Box lays down some unusually tight solos on "Look At Yourself", and man, Lee Kerslake pounds his kit at songs end in a manner that would leave Heep's new drummer Russell Gilbrook, shaking and dazed in the corner. But it's only when Ken Hensley takes over lead vocal for "Lady In black" that the more familiar Heep sound appears. One can never fully separate "July Morning" from David Byron as it will always be remembered as his song. The Live 1973 version is still the best version of the song the band has ever recorded but Lawton sounds just fine. His voice is markedly different than Byron's but they fit in with the songs drive and theme. Lawton can't hit the glass shattering upper notes Byron could but Ken Hensley takes them on and... I'll be damned, he fucking hits 'em !!! Hensley also impresses with some groovin' ass Hammond which is strongly to the fore and there is some nice Mick Box fretwork, slightly buried in the mix. All in all it's a very strong version of this set piece and live Uriah Heep mainstay. John Lawton is a fine vocalist, and the studio albums he made with Uriah Heep were designed to suit his vocals well. This is a very good live document and important as the only official one from the John Lawton era. Mick Box writes in the liner notes that this is an honest representation of the band live, "warts and all", with no overdubs. This is some scorching stuff and its replay value proves its solid worth. Do you dig John Lawton? Well if you like 70s rock you do, so pick this up, slap it on, kick back and light up an imagined or real spliff and transport yourself back to either Germany or England in early 1979 for a band serving up some serious audial whup ass.
