SOLO IN SOHO is the debut solo album by Irish rock singer Philip Lynott, released while he was still in Thin Lizzy in April 18, 1980. Current and former Lizzy members guested on the album, including Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Snowy White, and Gary Moore. Brian Robertson also contributed to the writing of one of the tracks, "Girls". Musically it's a departure from Thin Lizzy's rockier stuff and he was exploring different styles but that great voice and word manship are consistent throughout. The only track here that's a bit of a duffer is ''Talk In '79'' which either doesn't really work or now sounds incredibly dated. There are many a great song here though that more than make up for it - ''Kings Call'' (his tribute to Elvis Presley) also the title track and a track that shows Lynott's softer side from all the rock star image ''A Child's Lullaby'' which is one of most surprising highlights here which could have easily turned into a slushy over sentimental drone but is conveyed with a real sense of conviction that its just heartwarming. Lynott was never afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve even harking back to the first Thin Lizzy album on songs like the beautiful ''Dublin''. The music he made during his career is timeless and the complex man he was is still of interest to so many people around the world. He, may be, is more important than Hendrix, Joplin or Jim Morrison because he was of era when music was the most important thing in life. This solo album is another great reminder of his much missed talent.

Regularly cited as one of the greatest pure rock stars of all time, Philip Lynott had already guided hard rock heroes Thin Lizzy for over a decade and nine studio albums before embarking on his first solo effort, SOLO IN SOHO, in 1980. Always the life of any party, Lynott would hold court in the studio, preaching an open-house policy which led to collaborations with countless fellow musicians and party animals and which led to a star-studded solo debut. Recorded by the regular band without any outside guests, opener "Dear Miss Lonely Hearts" is the great, lost Thin Lizzy track [a Lynott masterpiece] from its immaculate songwriting, to its innocently romantic tell-tale lyrics. "King's Call" is slightly less inspired, but benefits from a laid-back vibe and typically fluid guitar solo from Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler. From here on out, Lynott introduces a wild assortment of new sounds and styles, including the gorgeous string overkill of "A Child's Lullaby"; the saxophone- and synthesizer-led pop of "Tattoo" and "Girls," respectively; the reggae swing of the title track; the Spanish guitar of "Jamaican Run"; and even the full-on electronic dance music of "Yellow Pearl." The darker "Ode To A Black Man" revisits more familiar hard rock turf, while "Talk in '79" brings the album to a close with a muscular bassline, topped with Lynott's husky voice delivering free-form poetry. An album that serious Thin Lizzy fans will have to own.
