Bob Dylan- REAL LIVE- CD- 1984/2008- Columbia/CBS Inc.- 07464399442- 400 grn
REAL LIVE is a live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on 29th November 1984, by Columbia Records. Recorded during the artist's 1984 European Tour, most of the album was recorded at Wembley Stadium on 7th July, but "License To Kill" and "Tombstone Blues" come from St James' Park, Newcastle on 5th July, and "I And I" and "Girl From The North Country" were recorded at Slane Castle, Ireland on 8th July 1984. The performances on REAL LIVE were recorded in support of his successful Infidels album. It may be his first live album in six years, but REAL LIVE still is his fourth live album in ten years. Nevertheless, it doesn't feel anywhere nearly as unnecessary as Bob Dylan At Budokan and if it doesn't capture a historically significant tour, this is a better record all the same, capturing a working band. A working band featuring ex-Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, no less. That means there are few revelations, but it's still pretty good all the same, providing lean, relatively muscular renditions of Dylan's great songs. This isn't an important, necessary Dylan record, but it's a good, solid live album, his best live album since Before The Flood, even if it's hardly as monumental as that.
PERSONNEL: Bob Dylan – guitar, harmonica, keyboards, vocals; Colin Allen – drums; Ian McLagan – keyboards; Carlos Santana – guitar; Gregg Sutton – bass guitar; Mick Taylor – guitar.
A bit too late for kickbutt rock and roll, isn't it? Still, with a bit of imagination you might even enjoy it. Bob's REAL LIVE live album displays a sudden and totally startling departure from the kind of live sound he'd been experimenting with throughout the Seventies. He's gone back to a simple five-person back-up, with Mick Taylor being the most prominent of the musicians. There's also Ian McLagan on keyboards, who used to serve the Faces and The Stones. The drastic re-arrangements are gone, too: out of the ten selections, only one, ''Masters Of War'', is beyond recognizability. Everything looks as if Bob had listened to a couple of his old live tapes and decided, all of a sudden, that he wanted to be a rock'n'roller again. So the band mercilessly crunches and punches through his old standards, at a speedy tempo and with Stonesy guitar solos courtesy of Mr ''Once Was A Rolling Stone'' Mick Taylor. As a result, it all sounds OK and hardly offensive for hardcore formulaic Dylan fans. Bob sings everything in his weezy tone that he'd developed somewhere around 1978 and wouldn't have changed until Time Out Of Mind. The old roaring vocal cords energy of old is not to be found any more. The material is strong, of course, but it's no particular asset. The main highlights, though, should be recognized in the excellent album closing version of ''Tombstone Blues'' starring guest player Carlos Santana on lead. A drastically re-arranged ''Masters Of War'' with some hard-rocking guitar that manages to nearly ruin it and completely transform it into a mighty arena rocker all at once. One more ''Ballad Of A Thin Man'' which sounds oh so good without the backing vocals. Actually, many people don't give a damn about Dylan's live albums. And even if this particular album doesn't present you with the main attraction of Dylan's live performance, it's still solid. You just gotta remember that Dylan's schtick often was to murder a particular song in concert and make the listeners enjoy the actual process. It is just like that. If Bob murders a song, it's because he wants to, not because he can'te right way. It's a special nihilistic position, the one Mr Zimmerman has secretly preached all his life. Real life, heh heh.
