PENGUIN is the seventh studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released in March 1973. It was the first Fleetwood Mac album after the departure of Danny Kirwan, the first to feature Bob Weston and the only one to feature Dave Walker. This not an essential recording. In the Fleetwood Mac catalog, this would probably rank near the bottom of the total list of titles in a priority ranking. It is not a bad record, it is not a stinker. In Fleetwood Mac's long history there are three distinct phases. Obviously there's is the Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac which extended all the way through the LP 'Kiln House' (even though Green left prior to that recording). The next phase begins with the entrance of Bob Welch and lurches through to 'Heroes Are Hard To Find' and the exit of Bob Welch. This is the journey through the "wilderness". Fleetwood Mac suffered from their ill-fit to changing musical styles, personal turmoil (nothing new here), and instability with personnel issues (again nothing new). Yet, they persevered. It was during this period that PENGUIN was recorded and issued. It is not exceptionally strong, nor compelling, nor does it have a coherent vision. This whole second phase is disheartening, yet it produces albums and singular numbers that are great and continue to age very well.
