John Mayall- ROCK IT IN THE POCKET- CD- 2017- Laser Media Production- 5584420481595- 300 grn
Legendary blues rocker John Mayall, live in concert recorded in 1983. A fairly dubious release with precious little recording information and not bad sound quality. It has been suggested that this originates from Italy 1983 on the reunion tour. The presence on bass of Steve Thompson (only gleaned via announcements on the CD) would tend to confirm this, although it could be December '82. Mick Taylor and Colin Allen probably make up the rest of the band, although there is a female guest vocalist on ''Little Baby'' (aka ''You Go And I'll Go With You'') and ''Baby What You Want Me To Do'' - no identity is given or announced. Performance-wise, this is a stunning set with some excellent solos from Mick Taylor on ''Have You Heard'' and ''Lookin' For Willie'', and the usual harp virtuosity from John himself. In terms of sound however, this is fairly awful. The mix is muddy, the keyboards are lost, while the bass and drums are indistinguishable at times. The prominent tape hiss gets very annoying, and you wonder if they'd ever heard of Dolby. Small print on the sleeve claims that this is an official radio broadcast, although it stops short of saying this was an official recording or release - it's either a really bad soundboard or reasonably good audience recording. Either way it should never have been released as is, and can only recommend it for completists and/or historical value. It's almost enjoyable if you turn it up, then go and listen from another room.
