- St. George Music Ltd./Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd.- 5034504316324- 500 grn
2-CD album set featuring live recordings including one track from the last performance by the Laurel Canyon line up at Birmingham Town Hall on May 9th 1969 plus tracks recorded live in June 1969 with his line-up formed after he relocated to the USA. Get this album – it’s the best British blues album have ever heard. Not to say that this album is all blues. There are country influences, scat-singing, drum and harmonica solos and great long jams, not to mention the beautiful ballad “Sleeping By Her Side”. This really is something else than your average “rocked-up” British blues of the 60s. Words don’t do this album justice. Dig it. LIVE: 1969 captures the 'Guitar God Of The Blues' and his Bluesbreakers at a critical point in their career. The first track of the album was the last performance of the Laurel Canyon line-up of John Mayall, Mick Taylor, Steve Thompson and Colin Allen recorded at Birmingham Town Hall on 9 May 1969. After the tour, Mayall relocated to the United States and opted for a non-drums line-up. This concertante look back at the year 1969 delivers recordings from Birmingham, York and Plymouth. With Colin Allen, Mick Taylor, Johnny Almond, Steve Thompson and Jon Mark, Mayall performed jazzy acoustic blues with ''Room To Move'' as the highlight.
PERSONNEL: Colin Allen (Drums); Mick Taylor (Guitar); Johnny Almond (Flute/Saxes); Joe Mark (Acoustic Guitar); Steve Thompson (Bass); John Mayall (Vocal, Guitar, Harmonica).
John Mayall is a British multi-instrumentalist (playing guitar, keyboards, harmonica), composer, bluesman, pioneer of rock music. He was born into the family of Murray Mayall - guitarist and jazz enthusiast. From an early age, he listened to American bluesmen such as Leadbelly, Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith and Eddie Lang, and taught himself to play the piano, guitar and harmonica. After college, Mayall served three years in the British Army in Korea. In 1956, he began playing the blues in the semi-professional group The Powerhouse Four, and then in The Blues Syndicate. Influenced by Alexis Korner, he moved to London and formed John Mayall's Bluesbreakers there. Mayall was on average ten years older than the first generation of British rock 'n' roll and rock musicians, and by the time he was born he already had years of musical experience. No wonder then that he became the doyen of the rock scene in the first half of the 1960s. Mayall was also the first who reached for the roots of rock music - blues and initiated the style of blues rock. His group John Mayall Blues Breakers, which was a kind of "breeding ground" and a school of talent, included such musicians as Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce of Cream, Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones, John Hisemann (founder of the Colosseum group) and many others. Most of Mayall's students far surpassed him in popularity. In the late 1960s, after commercial success in the US, Mayall moved to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles and blended into the local blues rock and jazz rock scene. Nothing less than our old blues hero - those who can remember it. Mayall was one of the pioneers, musically and purely hippie-wise. The music holds up - even more than that, it has the cool acidic folk-blues sound. Mick Taylor is (only) on the first track Mayall is "back" with a more acoustic set-up. 17 long tracks.
