Steven Tyler- WE'RE ALL SOMEBODY FROM SOMEWHERE- CD- 2016- Dot Records- 602547967558- 400 grn
WE'RE ALL SOMEBODY FROM SOMEWHERE is the debut solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Steven Tyler. The album was released on 15th July 2016, by Dot Records. For anyone who’s been paying attention for the past couple of decades, it’s no secret that the poppy, crowd-pleasing brand of arena rock that ruled the charts in the 1970s and ’80s, and to which Aerosmith was of course a central contributor, never really went away. Instead, when, in the ’90s, the genre quickly began to wane in popularity and street cred in the face of hip-hop and alt-rock’s increasing commercial success, Garth Brooks, Mutt Lange, and others simply slapped a cowboy hat on it and called it Country. Since then, most Top 40 country has owed far more to, say, Def Leppard than Hank Williams. Now, country hits are more often peppered with references to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen than to Waylon, Willie, and Cash. In this environment, WE'RE ALL SOMEBODY FROM SOMEWHERE fits in perfectly. The fact that it’s Steven Tyler singing these songs (and he’s very much still in fine voice) instead of a guy with a Southern accent eliminates any conceit that modern country doesn’t share the same DNA with the likes of Aerosmith. All you need to make it “country” are a few fiddles and banjos, some dumb, corny lyrics about whiskey, Jesus, and America, and a gilded album cover with giant paisley font on it. Steven Tyler is happy to oblige on all counts. Tyler co-wrote twelve of the album’s fifteen songs with an array of hit-making Nashville songwriters (the exceptions being two covers and an ill-advised, dirge-like rearrangement of “Janie’s Got A Gun”). The fact that one can easily imagine of them appearing on a Brad Paisley album is more indicative of the current state of country music than of Tyler changing his stylistic approach. In fact, at times Tyler even expands rather than restricts his musical palette. Still, these songs are effective as country or any other kind of music. The title track in particular is an appealing piece of genre-bending, marrying a funky backbeat, rootsy mandolin strumming, and honking New Orleans-style horns surprisingly well. Steven Tyler’s solo debut, recorded in Nashville and leaning heavily on radio-friendly country music, is refreshingly distinct from the stadium hard rock he’s been making for almost half a century as Aerosmith’s frontman. It starts very promisingly: the self-doubt expressed on the stripped-back opener ''My Own Worst Enemy'' is genuinely affecting, while ''Love Is Your Name'' boasts an irrepressibly upbeat chorus. ''I Make My Own Sunshine'', meanwhile, might resemble a backwoods take on Catatonia’s ''Road Rage'', yet it still possesses a certain charm. But the quality control suffers elsewhere: ''Only Heaven'' is teeth-grindingly formulaic, while ''RED, WHITE & YOU''’s flag-waving lyrics sound like a winning board of US patriotism cliche bingo (“American girls!”, “The fourth of July!”, “Good ol’ boys!”). And a 68-year-old man calling a song ''Gypsy Girl'' in 2016 is wearyingly anachronistic. Steven Tyler lays into the crawling schmaltz songs where signifiers substitute for significance and it really doesn't matter at all, partially because Tyler never figured out what he wanted this album to be. By the time he closes the record it's clear that nobody involved with WE'RE ALL SOMEBODY FROM SOMEWHERE had a conception for the music: they just wanted to cut a record that would be everything for everyone in the hopes it'd appeal to somebody from somewhere. They wound up with a record that tries hard to please but never does because the labor is always too evident.
