SMOKEY & FRIENDS is a studio album by musician Smokey Robinson. It was released on 19th August 2014 under Verve Records. It stands as Smokey's second most successful solo album. SMOKEY & FRIENDS seems like it's as much an American Idol judges and mentors project than a celebration of Smokey Robinson's career. Smokey Robinson duets with his guests on fresh versions of popular compositions he wrote during the early '60s through the early '80s, popularized by Smokey himself. The array of vocal matchups alternates between suitable and, yeah, peculiar. Not only is it a poor matchup with Smokey's typically sweet and steady delivery. Smokey Robinson gets the best results with the veteran R&B women, Ledisi and Mary J. Blige, while pairings with the likes of Elton John and James Taylor are livelier than expected but forgettable. The noteworthy guests aren't limited to singers. Among the backing musicians are Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, John Mayer, Cornelius Mims, Jim Keltner, and Randy Jackson. The instrumental support is mostly middle-of-the-road adult contemporary R&B without any conscious attempt to sound retro. Compared to the originals, or even the better covers released during the intervening years, these versions are pleasant. Had everyone recorded together, the set would have at least benefited from some unforced spontaneity. But history rarely lies. Smokey Robinson has shown that it is best not to think about an album like SMOKEY & FRIENDS as a meaningful musical event. It is best to think it in the way you would think about the covers band at your cousin's wedding: you'll know all the words to the songs, everything will hopefully be in tune, and it will all sound better if you're drinking.
PERSONNEL: Smokey Robinson features duets with Gary Barlow, Aloe Blacc, Mary J. Blige, JC Chasez, Sheryl Crow, CeeLo Green, Elton John, Jessie J, Ledisi, John Legend, Miguel, James Taylor, and Steven Tyler.
SMOKEY & FRIENDS leads off with a straight-ahead duet with Elton John whose deep voice is virtually unrecognizable, before delivering its most inspired moment: Steven Tyler gives some over-the-top grit to the mildly driving blues-rock cover, providing one of the few spontaneous moments on the disc and giving a hint of where this album could have gone with a looser script. Unfortunately, those few high points are far outweighed by the tepid remainder. Maybe the biggest challenge for an album like SMOKEY & FRIENDS is that it is tough to provide anything surprising or fresh when covering such a well worn set of songs. These were Smokey's biggest hits and they've all been remade dozens (some hundreds) of times. However, it would have been nice if there was at least an attempt to freshen them up a bit. Unfortunately, there are few creative twists here, just inauspicious, note for note replicas of past hits that do neither the legendary compositions nor the imported talent much justice. Smokey Robinson has accomplished enough over his career to earn a free pass, and he uses it in full on SMOKEY & FRIENDS.
