The trio crafted songs that sonically resonated beyond the visual imagery of their famous videos. Produced by ZZ Top, along with Carl Stubner, the 11-track work re-purposes that imagery with a cavalcade of voices, canvassing robust material as all-stars ( The M.O.B. featuring Mick Fleetwood, Steven Tyler, Jonny Lang and John McVie cover “Sharp Dressed Man” ) rising superstars (a lusty Grace Potter & the Nocturnals roar through “Tush” ), behemoth rock monoliths ( Mastodon on a raging “Just Got Paid” ) and a cool breeze of modern textures ( Wyclef Jean breathes new life into “Rough Boy” ) help round out a vibrant tribute album.

A new tribute album to “Little Ol’ Band from Texas” is now available, featuring performers from across the music world. ZZ TOP: A Tribute From Friends is the fourth collection of covers to pay homage to the southern rock legends and has all their classic hits. Among the lineup is former Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie, who joins Mick Fleetwood, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and guitarist Jonny Lang to form the M.O.B. The group kicks off the album with their take on “Sharp Dressed Man.” Other notable bassists trying to do their best Dusty Hill impression include Filter’s Phil Buckman, Catherine Popper of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Nickelback’s Mike Kroeger, Wolfmother’s Ian Peres, Duff McKagan and Jeff Rouse of Loaded, Michael Todd of Coheed and Cambria, Mastodon’s Troy Sanders and Daughtry’s Josh Paul. “…We were told there was going to be a ZZ Top tribute album a while ago and logically asked, ‘Who are we paying tribute to?,’” ZZ Top said in a statement. “Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief. For the past 40 or so years, all we’ve done is get out there and crank it and try to have a good time while doing so. To a great extent, we’ve succeeded since we’re still having a good time so that would be reward enough for ‘the same three guys playing the same three chords’.
