GREATEST HITS: Steel Box Collection is a compilation album released by Aerosmith in 2008. First compilation Gems of studio material since 1980's Greatest Hits was released by Aerosmith on 15th November 1988. Concentrated mainly on heavier material than the radio-friendly singles output on Greatest Hits, the album is noted for the inclusion of the 1978 studio version of "Chip Away The Stone" – previously released as a single from 1978's Live! Bootleg, only a live rendition of the song was released at the time. With 1987's Permanent Vacation successfully restoring Aerosmith's reputation as one of hard rock's finest, Columbia Records decided the time was right to issue a follow-up of sorts to their 1980 compilation, Greatest Hits. The result, 1988's Gems, features almost all the tracks that were missing from the first collection. Like The Stones and Zeppelin, Aerosmith's album cuts often eclipsed their more renowned material, making Gems an indispensable collection. In 2007 The album was released by Sony BMG as part of their Collections Series entitled Collections and reissued the following 2008 year by Sony in their Steel Box Collection Series as GREATEST HITS.

The compilation falls somewhere between Best-Of and career retrospective but ultimately signifies nothing more than the fact that Aerosmith were top-notch song crafters during their first decade. First things first, none of the songs found on 1980 Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits collection make an appearance on this disc. What the listener is left with is twelve songs that embody the Aerosmith experience more so than the Aerosmith legend. It is a solid, rewarding listen, featuring the best Aerosmith songs. This album foregoes the standard chronological order and opts for a more natural, flowing sequence of songs that keeps the album moving and plays to all of the band’s strengths. By sequencing the album as if putting together a fresh album of new music, this compilation takes advantage of the sameness of the music and feels more cohesive than boring. Additionally, by placing tracks like ‘'No Surprise'' (off the band’s unfairly maligned Night In The Ruts) up next against cuts from their classic Rocks album, this collection proves once and for all that even when buried under a mountain of drugs, Aerosmith never lost their touch. Although the fact that here features the studio version of ‘'Chip Away The Stone'’ and not the more familiar live version suggests that even Columbia and the band are admitting that their performances were suffering. But really, anyone with more than two Aerosmith albums already knows that the boys have never really put out a bad album, with the exception of Rock In A Hard Place of course. Even the selection from that album, ‘'Jail Bait'’ fares better when removed from the suck that was the rest of that album. This album, coupled with Greatest Hits 1980 would be a good choice for people looking to understand what the fuss is all about, just grab both, slam them into your iPod and hit shuffle for a truly definitive statement about Aerosmith’s first decade. Basically, this is an accompaniment to the 1980 Greatest Hits compilation so there is no duplication. Compilation was reissued in 2008 packaged in a limited edition steel box as part of Sony's Steel Box Collection.
