THE UNIVERSAL MASTERS COLLECTION Series.
CLASSIC AEROSMITH (The Universal Masters Collection Series) is a European compilation album by Aerosmith which features material from the band's time under the Geffen label. This is a compilation released by Geffen/Universal in some European countries in late 2000. It's title is CLASSIC AEROSMITH and it's a part of a series of albums, called The Universal Masters Collection, that has been released for several different bands. The liner notes have pictures of the band circa Get A Grip and Nine Lives era and has a brief write up about the band's history. This CD represents Aerosmith’s worldwide renaissance, comprising material from their Geffen albums, Done With Mirrors, Permanent Vacation, Pump and Get A Grip. All it says on the CD is Made In The EU so a general European release. The liner notes inside are dated Aug 2000 and apparently this CD was released on 12th November 2000. The European collection CLASSIC AEROSMITH shouldn't be taken as a collection of Aerosmith's biggest hits, even if it's seen as a collection that focuses only on their Geffen material. There are only a handful of songs that are actual hits here - "Amazing," "Eat The Rich," "What It Takes," "Janie's Got A Gun," "Rag Doll" - and there are an equal number from this time missing - "Crying," "Love In An Elevator," "Dude Looks Like A Lady," "The Other Side," for starters. The rest of this 18-track collection consists of album tracks and a handful of rarities. The result is a real hodgepodge that might have a few interesting rarities for collectors, but it won't satisfy any listeners just lookin' for the hits. Those who do not pay much attention to record company affiliations should be warned that this album represents only their most popular recordings made for Geffen Records between 1987 and 1994. That said, it represents them well. This, of course, was the period when the bandmembers were collaborating with such songwriting hacks as Desmond Child, Holly Knight, and Jim Vallance to considerable commercial effect, maintaining the comeback they had launched with Run-D.M.C.'s remake of "Walk This Way." Those who do not pay much attention to sonic trends in the record industry should be warned that while the album was 96k/24-bit mastered from the original master tapes, mastering approach responds to the tendency toward preparing music for its compression into MP3 files for digital downloading more than for old-fashioned CD audiophile listening.
