ARMAGEDDON: The Album is the soundtrack album to the 1998 Touchstone Pictures film Armageddon, released by Columbia Records and Hollywood Records on 23rd June 1998. The album features several songs recorded specifically for the soundtrack, including "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" and "What Kind Of Love Are You On", performed by Aerosmith, "Remember Me", performed by Journey, and "Mister Big Time", performed by Jon Bon Jovi. Our Lady Peace's "Starseed" is a remixed version of the original. The album was commercially successful in Japan, and was certified double Platinum in 1999. ARMAGEDDON: The Album was an international hit reaching #1 in the US and across the globe. The soundtrack is filled with tunes by major recording artists including Jon Bon Jovi, Journey, ZZ Top, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Patty Smyth, Shawn Colvin and four tracks by Aerosmith. Much of the success of the album was driven by the Aerosmith power ballad, "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." The song, written by renowned pop songwriter Diane Warren, debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The other Aerosmith tracks are the rockin' "What Kind Of Love Are You On," their 1991 Re-Mix of "Sweet Emotion" and their classic cover of the Beatles', "Come Together." "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" stayed at number one for four weeks and also reached # 1 in many countries around the world. In the UK, the song peaked at number four, becoming Aerosmith's highest charting song in the UK. With the theme of the film being the prospect of a giant meteor crashing into the earth, it is only fitting that the soundtrack is packed with explosive hits and stars. ARMAGEDDON features a instrumental dramatic theme "Theme From Armageddon'' composed by Trevor Rabin. The album features all the songs that rocked this movie blockbuster and became one of the best selling soundtracks in history. For what is essentially a bunch of washed up 80's bands doing covers of themselves released in 1998, it's actually better than you thought it would be. Aerosmith are always.... usually good and they have some pretty cool tracks on here, "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" is fun. ZZ Top's "La Grange" is pretty awesome, we all love it and it's presence is welcomed. Bob Seger's on here, can't get tired of him, Bon Jovi, everybody loves him (*cough*). Well anyway there's also a really nice cover of "Leaving On A Jetplane" that you had never heard before which is quite nice. Well these are all pretty cool bands and it's like a mixtape of sorts that you happy to play every once in a while. Trevor Rabin never disappoints anyway. Except for those four Yes albums. They were terrible. ARMAGEDDON is a strange album, as far as carefully tailored soundtracks go. Nevertheless, the album features no less than four Aerosmith tunes, two of which are pretty standard latter-day Aerosmith songs that are outclassed not only by "Sweet Emotion," but even their hamfisted cover of "Come Together." Those four songs provide the core of an album that is clearly aimed at a "mature" audience. With new songs from Shawn Colvin, Patty Smyth, Jon Bon Jovi, Trevor Rabin, and Journey complete with new vocalist Steve Augeri, plus oldies by ZZ Top and Bob Seger, the album was never really intended for a young audience. Of course, stumbling post-grungsters Our Lady Peace and fledgling folk chanteuse Chantal Kreviazuk are added as attractions for younger audiences, but they don't add much to the stodgiest "event movie" soundtrack in memory. And that's really too bad, because if there's one audience that buys into event movies, it's adolescents - and, for all of its many flaws, Godzilla at least knew that much.
