Aerosmith- THE VIRGINIA CONNECTION- CD- 2015- Sonic Boom Production- 823564648927- 400 grn
This enticing broadcast performance was transmitted across the greater Virginia area by Westwood One FM in 1987. Recorded at Hampton Roads Coliseum, Hampton, VA on the 16th of November 1987 when Aerosmith were promoting their best selling album ever, the majestic yet dynamic masterwork, Permanent Vacation, which had been released three months earlier in the late summer. The set-list of course featured a number of cuts from this record, however the show was also notable for its wide selection of Aerosmith classics, taken from virtually every album the band had put out to date. The venue in Hampton has a capacity of 10,000 – Aerosmith had sold it out with ease. This period in the band s history might be thought of as their heyday. A time when Aerosmith were selling more records than they ever had previously, when their gigs were in larger halls than had been necessary before and when award after award was forthcoming, heavy rotation on MTV was par for the course and, it would appear, when the group could do no wrong. So from the opening announcer intro to his closing statement we get some prime Aerosmith, there isnt a duff moment here, its an excellent set of standards with the odd nugget thrown in, certainly the likes of ''Toys In The Attic'' and ''Same Old Song And Dance'' hammer the point home immediately while ''Back In The Saddle'' and ''Draw The Line'' are not as manic as in the past, almost laidback in comparison but there’s a groove that this band hits and when on their game its superb. Its great to hear ''Lightning Strikes'' and possibly the best version of ''Big Ten Inch Record''. Another highlight has to be the extended version (almost 10 minutes) of ''Rats In The Cellar'', possibly something specifically for this gig as they knew it was being taped. Things end with a fantastic foursome, ''Dream On'', ''Sweet Emotion'', ''Walk This Way'' and ''Train Kept A Rollin'' which will keep your feet tapping.
PERSONNEL: Steven Tyler – lead vocals, harmonica; Joe Perry – lead and rhythm guitar, backing vocals, pedal steel guitar; Brad Whitford – lead and rhythm guitar; Tom Hamilton – bass guitar; Joey Kramer – drums.
Well, well....another Aerosmith goodie released "legitimately" on CD. Wonder if the band know about all these releases and how well they control their back catalogue. Either way this was originally released as a radio station promo for the Westwood One Superstar Concert Series... and one version was actually called THE VIRGINIA CONNECTION same as this release. Now although the sound on this release is very good the ''Rag Dolls'' version is clearer/sharper... plus it's legit right. The performance is pretty good taking in songs from nearly every Aerosmith album to that date and it is an enjoyable hi energy ride through some of the bands catalogue. This CD is a good addition for anyone building up a collection of "off the beaten track" recordings by them. This CD most certainly provides all the evidence necessary to understand why all this was the case. If youre looking for something live from this era, you could found a lot worse than go for this album. Now if someone would only release the 1980 Starfleet Broadcast featuring the relatively short lived Jimmy Crespo and Brad Whitford line up, cool broadcast that!
