DONE WITH MIRRORS is the eighth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released on 4th November 1985. It marked the return to the band of guitarists Joe Perry, who left in 1979 and Brad Whitford, who departed in 1981. The band's first album on Geffen Records, it was intended as their ‘comeback’. However, the record failed to live up to commercial expectations despite positive reviews. In keeping with the title, all the text (bar the catalog number and UPC) on the original releases were written back-to-front – to be read by holding it to a mirror. Rereleases flip the artwork so it can be read without a mirror, and add the band's logo. The title refers both to illusions that are "done with mirrors", and the laying out of drugs such as cocaine, traditionally snorted off a mirror. From being one of the biggest American rock bands in the 1970's they more or less destroyed their own reputation thanks to members leaving, drugs and shows where lyrics was forgotten... Oh... And falling off stage. By the mid 1980's most bands of the earlier era was gone from big business. Many had probably counted Aerosmith as down and out. But then came DONE WITH MIRRORS and it was a commercial flop. Compared to some later Aerosmith albums and compilations it was a big flop. Though that it has aged surprsingly well.
PERSONNEL: Steven Tyler – lead vocals, piano, harmonica, percussion; Joe Perry – guitar, slide guitar, backing vocals; Brad Whitford – guitar, acoustic guitar; Tom Hamilton – bass guitar; Joey Kramer – drums, percussion.
Joe Perry returned to the fold in 1985, and Aerosmith turned out their finest record since Rocks. Unlike the records that preceded it, DONE WITH MIRRORS is powered by the same smart-assed lyrics and filthy guitars that formed the core of Aerosmith's best songs. It didn't receive the commercial or critical attention that Permanent Vacation did two years later, but DONE WITH MIRRORS is the better album. It marks the beginning of their remarkable comeback. This album is better than a few earlier AND later releases by the band. Why? Because it does what Aerosmith does best: Writing riffs and ballads while having a certain energy that few manage to match in their own right. The later Aersomith Unplugged show from MTV shows exactly. Many other bands might be more technial, be harder, have smarter lyrics, be more progressive.. But when the feeling and flow is right Aerosmith is in a league few others can match. DONE WITH MIRRORS is a bare-bones Aerosmith record that was the band recorded without the benefit of outside songwriters. The results range from the rhythmically slinky "Shela" to the funky boogie of "The Hop." Elsewhere, songs such as the hard-hitting "My Fist Your Face" and the slide guitar-drenched "She's On Fire" show the band was able to shake the rust off after almost six years apart. The truest sign that the spark of classic Aerosmith still burned deep is a cover of "Let The Music Do The Talking." Originally recorded by The Joe Perry Project, this interpretation is a runaway train of pounding rhythms, screaming guitars, and Steven Tyler's fiery harp blowing and a jive-talking delivery. It all is quite straight forward but... It rocks! With the right speakers/headphones/system this has a laid-back approach to rock that the band never catched on a officcal release again. Well.. Maybe here and there... but in general this was truly goodbye to the classic Aerosmith.
