ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER is the third album by The Joe Perry Project, released in September 1983 on MCA Records. Joe Perry is the lead guitarist, backing and occasional lead vocalist, and contributing songwriter for the American rock band Aerosmith. ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER is the third and final release from The Joe Perry Project. The new lineup couldn't light a fire under Joe Perry like the original The Joe Perry Project could, and when you add a bunch of predictable compositions to the mix, you got the weakest The Joe Perry Project release yet. Judging form the band photos on the album, the group was trying desperately to fit in with the then-blossoming glam metal scene. A few tracks will be appreciated by hardcore Joe Perry fans. After ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER, it was completely understandable why Joe Perry ditched the Project and returned to his original compadres, Aerosmith, in 1984.

Whoa, Joe... say it ain't so. Now workin' for MCA, Joe Perry's third solo effort, ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER failed to deliver the goods. After the Boston-based axe slinger pumped out a pair of solid studio releases, LP number three proved to be as bad as the awful collection of KISS solo albums. Based on the strength of the songs from Joe's previous pair of solo recordings, Let The Music Do The Talking and I've Got The Rock 'N' Rolls Again, more of the same was expected from The Joe Perry Project. It wasn't to be, and the Joe Perry fan base turned on the album in a major way. ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER failed on all levels, illustrating how low Joe Perry had sunk due to drug and alcohol problems. Obviously, Columbia knew what was goin' down when the executives from the powerful label cut ties with introverted guitarist following the release of I've Got The Rock 'N' Rolls Again. The songs recorded for the uninspired ONCE A ROCKER, ALWAYS A ROCKER album... just don't cut it. Joe's lone MCA recording is loaded down with out-right filler. In addition, "Cowboy" Mach Bell's vocals are abrasive. Didn't anyone else show when Joe Perry auditioned for a new front man? Or, was Joe Perry too busy shootin' up in the corner to pay attention? Joe Perry had proved he was capable of so much more... but the wild rock 'n' roll lifestyle had tossed the former Aerosmith guitarist to the hard riffin' wayside. 80's beginning was probably just partying for him, but towards the end of 80's he's career was just going up and he ended that decade with one of the most popular bands. End well, all is well. If you have any aspirations towards being an Aerosmith completist and you need this, and it costs like twenty, thirty bucks cuz it's out of print... Give this album a listen if you haven't in 3-5 years! Think it kicks all kinds of ass and has aged particularly well!
