The Joe Perry Project- LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING- CD- 1980/1990-
- CBS Records Inc./Columbia- 07464363882- 400 grn
LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING is the first of three studio albums by The Joe Perry Project, released in March 1980. It was the band's most successful, selling approximately 250,000 copies in the United States. The title track was later re-recorded in by Aerosmith on their 1985 reunion album Done With Mirrors, albeit with a slightly different melody and Steven Tyler-penned lyrics. Joe Perry split from Aerosmith under less than favorable circumstances in 1979, directly assembling a solo band, The Joe Perry Project, which soon released its first album, 1980's LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING. Unlike his former band, which would now take excessive amounts of time to record albums that should have been cranked out quickly, LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING recalled the brash and trashy appeal of early Aerosmith. Maybe because he wanted to show his former bandmates that he could succeed without them, the performances were extremely inspired, while the songwriting was sharp and focused. The anthemic title track was aimed at all the in-press bickering that was going on at the time between Aerosmith and Joe Perry. While subsequent The Joe Perry Project albums didn't contain many Joe Perry lead vocal spots, the singing on the debut is split 50/50 between Perry and Morman. Tracks such as "Conflict Of Interest," "Discount Dogs," "Shooting Star," and "Rocking Train" were all up-tempo highlights, and the instrumental "Break Song" showed off the fantastic interplay between the new band, while "The Mist Is Rising" was more low-key. A truly great and underrated record, LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING could have been a classic Aerosmith release if the drugs hadn't split the band apart.
PERSONNEL: Ralph Morman – vocals; Joe Perry – guitars, lead vocals, backing vocals, bass synthesizer, percussion; David Hull – bass guitar, bass synthesizer, backing vocals; Ronnie Stewart – drums, percussion; Rocky Donahue – percussion.
Second only to his 2005 'solo' release, amply and simply titled Joe Perry, LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING is one killer rock n' roll album from start to finish. Hell, in all honesty LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING is the greatest Aerosmith album the band never recorded. From start to finish LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING is a guitar work out. At this point it was the best and strongest guitar playing Joe Perry had done since Aerosmith's 1976 album Rocks. ''Break Song'' alone is among the best playing Joe Perry has ever recorded. A guitar work out for sure. But album isn't entirely about Joe Perry's masterful guitar work. Joe Perry wanted to rock and really rock when he left Aerosmith in 1979 and he sure did that here. The poignantly titled, title track served as his mind set at the time and really a jab at the man with the scarves. It would a few years later serve as one of the best tracks Aerosmith would ever record. Always one to bring a little funk into Aerosmith ''Rockin Train'' was just that a funky little rocker in the vein as ''Walk This Way'' and ''Last Child.'' Elsewhere the moody ''The Mist Is Rising'' the managerial jab at Leber-Krebs ''Conflict Of Interest'' and the albums closer ''Life At A Glance'' really show the power of Joe Perry as a great rock n' roll song writer and at times, vocalist. Night In The Ruts was a solid album sure, but neither Night In The Ruts, the Joe Perry and Brad Whitford-less Rock In And Hard Place or the reunion of Done With Mirrors could compare to the power of The Joe Perry Projects fantastic debut album.
