Aerosmith- BAYING AT THE MOON- CD- 2013- Smokin’ Production- 823564633626- 400 grn
In 1978, the roller coaster ride of Aerosmith's career was soon to go into a major dive - within a year, Joe Perry would leave the band, they'd release their first truly disappointing album Night In The Ruts, and their substance abuse issues would begin to seriously sap the strength of their live show. But no one knew that was in the cards when Aerosmith strode onto the stage at the Boston Music Hall for a special hometown show that was being broadcast live on WCBN-FM. That night, Aerosmith were still America's biggest rock band and they were not about to let their Boston fans down. BAYING AT THE MOON has circulated for years as a bootleg, and with good reason -- it captures the band on a great night, with the guitar firepower of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford sounding razor-sharp, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer tirelessly pouring out the beat, and Steven Tyler delivering the attitude and high-pitched wail that made him one of rock's greatest frontmen in the '70s. And while the audio is a step or two down from ideal, the mix gets the fire of the performance just right, and the compression of the audio actually favors Aerosmith's arena-friendly sound at this point in their career. If BAYING AT THE MOON has a flaw, it's the set list, which features a few too many lesser tunes from Draw The Line, then their most recent album. Has there ever been an Aerosmith fan who really wanted to hear "Kings And Queens"? But if you want concrete proof that in the spring of 1978 Aerosmith still had the goods and then some, BAYING AT THE MOON is the disc you need. As Peter Buck once said, "If you grew up in the '70s, you liked Aerosmith". And this show proves those kids liked that band for a very good reason.
PERSONNEL: Steven Tyler - lead vocals, harmonica; Joe Perry - lead guitar; Brad Whitford - guitar; Tom Hamilton - bass; Joey Kramer - drums.
Having sold over 150 million albums worldwide, Aerosmith can justifiably lay claim to being the best-selling American rock band of all time. Each of the four studio albums from which material in this set is drawn is now multi-platinum selling releases. That's what you call success. The band originally came together in Boston in 1970. Their eponymous debut album was released in January 1973. From there the band never really looked back and in 1975 they really broke through into the mainstream with the 8 x platinum selling Toys In The Attic. This high energy show is from Aerosmith's 1978 national tour in support of 5th album Draw The Line. It was broadcast live on Boston's local FM station WBCN. As you would expect in the band's hometown, The Music Hall was completely sold out for this gig resulting in what is regarded as the hottest performance from the boys during this outstanding tour. The set list this evening is stuffed with classic numbers. From current album Draw The Line are no less than six killer cuts. From the band's previous album, Rocks come opening cut ''Rats In The Cellar'' and ''Get The Lead Out''. The band's most successful album ever, Toys In The Attic is represented by ''Big Ten Inch Record'', ''Walk This Way'', ''Sweet Emotion'' and the title track. Also notable is ''Chip Away The Stone'', a song written by Richie Supa, a friend of the band, which was released as a single and also appears on Aerosmith's Live! Bootleg album. At the close there are steam-rolling covers of Kokomo Arnold's perennial ''Milk Cow Blues'' and The Yardbirds' ''Train Kept A Rollin'''. But enough of the hyperbole, for real proof of Aerosmith's metal, just crank this baby up and let it rock!
