Aerosmith- WRITE ME A LETTER- CD- 2016- On Stage Entertainment- 9113817130011- 400 grn
Recorded in 1973 during a session for Radio WWM-FM, WRITE ME A LETTER offers us nine tracks by Aerosmith then all dashing, all dapper, all young, not yet the Hard Rock war machine now adored and respected by all. Nine titles in forty five minutes, benefiting from an excellent sound that is both clear, precise and powerful (for the time), this very old-fashioned Live reveals to us a forgotten facet of the Washington combo, much more calm and bluesy than which was later composed by Steven Tyler's band. Aerosmith emerged as a blues rock alternative in a music sea of glam rock and prog rock of the early 1970s. Their impressive 1973 debut album doesn’t contain anything particularly innovative musically, but still manages to forge some unforgettable moments. The album is also the band’s most authentically bluesy release (something they’d try to replicate three decades later with the 2004 cover album Honkin’ On Bobo) and some of these extended blues numbers were the longest songs the band would ever release. Band leader and lead vocalist Steven Tyler wrote the bulk of the original material and uses a bit of an exaggerated “blues” voice, something he would soon abandon.
PERSONNEL: Steven Tyler – lead vocals, harmonica; Joe Perry – guitars, backing vocals; Brad Whitford – guitars; Tom Hamilton – bass guitar; Joey Kramer – drums.
Steven Tyler began performing as a drummer in his native New Hampshire as early as 1964. In nearby Massachusetts, guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton formed a free-form and blues group called the Jam Band (commonly known as Joe Perry’s Jam Band). Eventually the performers were united in 1970 in Boston by drummer Joey Kramer, a Berkley student who had gotten to know all the above musicians. With Kramer on drums, Tyler moved to “frontman” and the new band chose a name inspired by Harry Nilsson’s album Aerial Ballet. Another Berkley student, Brad Whitford joined as rhythm guitarist in 1971, completing the classic line-up which makes up the band to this day. By the time their debut album was released, the band had been playing constantly for nearly three years, helping to forge a confident boogie-blues and riff-based hard rock sound. Producer Adrian Barber captured this sound in a raw yet professional manner, avoiding the typical stumbles and haziness that normally comes with a debut. This is a true radio broadcast complete with DJ announcements and it's crystal clear - as a matter of fact, it's almost too clear as you can hear the band make an occasional mistake, but then again, this was early in their career and they were still developing their stage show and sound. That said, the playing is pretty much spot-on. You get the entire first album (minus "Dream On" which was not developed enough to play the two intertwining guitar parts live yet) and three covers - "I Ain't Got You", "Mother Popcorn" and "Train Kept A Rollin'" which ended up on their next album, Get Your Wings. You'Il pleasantly surprised, especially if you're a fan of early Aerosmith and/or their first album. A wicked good show broadcast live from Paul's Mall a small jazz/blues club long since gone. It's Aerosmith folks at their rockin, bluesy funky best right after the release of the first Aerosmith album. Due yourself a favor pick this up turn the lights down get your favorite drink and maybe some tea ala ''Mama Kin'' sit back and be transported back it time when Aerosmith rocked!!!!!
