PANDORA'S BOX is a compilation album, released on 19th November 1991, by Aerosmith. Issued by Columbia Records to capitalize on the band's newfound success with Geffen, the box set consists of three discs that cover Aerosmith's output from the 1960s and early 1980s. Alongside alternate versions, previously unreleased songs, live renditions and remixes, PANDORA'S BOX features previously released studio material. The original issue was as a long cardboard box, containing three CDs (each in its own jewel-case, with inserts) and a booklet that detailed the tracks and had comments from the band members. Later issues did away with the outer box, utilizing a cardboard slipcase, but reproduced the booklet in 'CD-size'. This 2012 edition reproduced in 'Book-size' with three transparent digipak-disc-mounts on the inside hard covers and includes 68 page book. PANDORA'S BOX is a comprehensive 3CD set documenting Aerosmith's years with Columbia (1966-1982). Among the 52 digitally remastered songs are 20 previously-unreleased recordings, alternate versions, unreleased live performances, rehearsal tapes and pre-Aerosmith recordings from Steven Tyler's band Chain Reaction. Also included is a 68 page book complete with previously-unpublished photos from the band's private collection, song-by-song commentary, and an essay by Rolling Stone's David Wild.

Aerosmith were written off by the pop pundits in the early '80s as a drug-ravaged bunch of Rolling Stones clones who would go down in music history as little more than a hard-rock footnote. The band, however, rose from the ashes to become an even mightier hit machine in the '90s, even if they ended up selling their soul to pop über-songstress Diane Warren in the bargain. This three-CD compilation is a marathon tour of their first glorious, casualty-ridden decade and a body of work that proudly wears its influences on its sleeve: Chicago and Delta blues, early R&B, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and, of course, The Rolling Stones. Virtually all the early hits and concert crowd pleasers are here, along with nearly two dozen rare, unreleased, and live cuts, thoroughly documented with refreshing doses of self-deprecation as it bravely traces the band's arc from Boston bar-band supreme to stadium superstars to seeming dissipation. Aerosmith's 1991 three-CD box set PANDORA'S BOX has just about everything you could possibly want: hits, demos, rarities, live material, key album tracks, and a book packed with classic photos, a bio, and the bandmembers' remembrances of all the tracks. PANDORA'S BOX is a superb overview of the group's work from their first self-titled album up until 1982's Rock In A Hard Place. Also included is solo material from Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, as well as an early track from Steven Tyler when he fronted a band called Chain Reaction in the '60s. The hits will attract the casual admirer, while the more obscure selections will surely please the longtime fan. Aerosmith was always an album-oriented band, and such selections as "No Surprize," "Three Mile Smile," "Lick And A Promise," "No More No More," and "Seasons Of Wither" often outshine the hits. By touching all the bases, PANDORA'S BOX is an excellent package. If there's a gaping hole in the "A" section of your hard-rock library, this is a fine introduction to the Aerosmith that influenced a generation of musicians.
