Take this CAJUN MOON from the late JJ Cale. The guy wasn't really the type to leave tapes lying around in the studio or sneak them off to bootleggers like Keith Richards. Besides, we can't say that he did a lot of concerts, let alone official live albums except the JJ Cale Live released in 2001. So one New Year's Eve at the end of 1975, he recorded a show for an FM radio station in Tulsa, the big city in Oklahoma where he was born. And our man is going to give us a very intimate show. We know he prefers a light side dish, but tonight he's really giving us a candlelit New Year's Eve. He has just released his first three albums (Naturally, Really and Okie) and the set list is a harmonious and successful mix of these. Troubadour is in the pipeline, so you might think this is one of the first renditions of Cocaine that has yet to be released on record. A more instrumental interpretation than the recorded version is offered here. Otherwise the interpretation is very laid-back, as always, even if JJ gives us some excellent choruses in his classics "Call Me The Breeze", "After Midnight" or "Crazy Mama" and brings us "his" version of the great classic. "Got My Mojo Working" with a superb saxophone chorus. A good testimony of JJ Cale in an intimate version, even if we can hope, one day, a real box set with unpublished and lesser-known live archives.
