Slade- WALL OF HITS- CD- 1991/2003- Perseverance Ltd./Polydor Ltd. (UK)- 731451161223- 400 grn
WALL OF HITS is a compilation album by the British rock band Slade. It was released on 11 November 1991. The album was issued by Polydor and included the last two singles to be recorded by the band: "Radio Wall Of Sound" and "Universe". ''Get Down And Get With It'', was the first of an amazing seventeen UK Top 20 hit singles for 70's super group, WALL OF HITS has them all !!! 20 tracks in total. Slade were a fine band, as this compilation demonstrates. They had a long string of big time hits in the 1970's and 1980's including six number one singles (all of which are included on this CD). There's barely a duff track among the 20 tracks on this album and most of them are excellent. The band members' fashion sense may have been non existent but their musical abilities were superb. There are the rockers ''Coz I Luv You'', ''Cum On Feel The Noize'' and ''Mama Weer All Crazee Now'' among others, but then there are also more meaningful tracks such as ''My Oh My'', ''How Does It Feel'' and ''Everyday'' that lay bare the myth that Slade just churned out catchy pop tunes. Oh and the iconic ''Merry Xmas Everybody'' is here as well, it could hardly have been omitted.
PERSONNEL: Noddy Holder – lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Dave Hill – lead guitar, backing vocals; Jim Lea – bass, piano, violin, keyboards, backing vocals, producer; Don Powell – drums.
Slade's 20-song WALL OF HITS comprises all their big hits (and inimitable spelling), including "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" and "Cum On Feel The Noize." By no means the first (or last) ever Slade hits collection, WALL OF HITS is nevertheless the only one you truly need, a solid roundup of every British Top Ten smash the band ever scored, plus a smattering of lesser-rated (but equally deserving) Top 20 entries, and only one track [1991's "Universe"] that really doesn't belong. Neither has time taken any toll on the quality of the music. Whether causing roaring traffic to grind to a halt or bearing their souls in a ballad, the members of Slade not only made great records, they also tapped emotions [wild and wacky, reflective and raw] that make fans never tire of singing their songs. The statistics behind the track listing, meanwhile, are boggling. Between 1971 and 1975, Slade slammed 17 songs into the chart, including half a dozen number ones and six more that peaked between number two and number four. All but one (1975's number 11 underachiever "In For A Penny") are here. The group resurfaced in 1982 for a second bite at the cherry, and delivered "Run Runaway" and "My Oh My" (plus a hit reissue of "Merry Xmas Everybody"); then they came back again in 1991 with "Radio Wall Of Sound." If Noddy Holder hadn't quit long ago, it would've taken a brave man indeed to bet against a fourth Slade revival in the first years of the present century. As it is - well, like the song says, "Thanks For The Memory."
