The Black Crowes- LIVE- 2CD- 2002- V2 Records, Inc.- 5033197207728- 500 grn
LIVE is a live album by The Black Crowes, released on 20th August 2002. It was produced by Rich Robinson and recorded at the Orpheum in Boston, MA on 30th and 31st October 2001. This was the last two shows before the band went on hiatus for a few years. The title is simple, and it describes exactly what you'll get - two discs and nineteen tracks of The Black Crowes in concert, tearing through fan favorites and chart hits. The album is culled from a series of concerts the group did on their farewell 2001 tour, with Rich Robinson sequencing the entire thing to flow close to an actual concert, right down to his brother Chris' winding, sometimes embarrassing stage patter. Though this isn't as gutsy or revelatory as the dynamite live album with Jimmy Page, it's still a really good live album, finding the band in fine form. Chris is in good voice, the band rocks hard, and the versions here, while not drastically different than the album versions, find the band stretching out where necessary. The Black Crowes are certainly a good rock and roll band, with a deep catalog of strong songs and a good sound, all evident here. True, this is pretty much the province of the dedicated, but those that are devoted fans will find this to be a sweet swan song.

Dip in and out of listening and it sounds good. It's to the audiences credit that band gets catapulted to success. And live they are at their best. If anything, this nineteen-track double live CD should forever make clear that the Crowes aren't pretending anymore. They are every inch the swaggering, bluesy road monsters they've always wanted to be, for better or worse. The Crowes aren't slaves so much to blues-rock history as they are to the historic energy level and groove that fuels the set's sweaty build to a hit-filled climax. Audiophiles may lament the album's raw arena sound, but it's just another ironic nod to the band's chosen roots. As any Crowes fan will tell you, live is the way to experience this band. As fine as the band’s studio albums are, the live environment is where their greatness is truly confirmed. Their willingness to fearlessly plunder their own back catalogue, the barnload of covers they’re able to whip out at a moment’s notice, and the fiery, extended jams they seem able to conjure from thin air. LIVE contains surprise - the inclusion of the legendary “Title Song”, live versions of which are feverishly sought by traders. Song was written around the time of the band’s third album but never recorded. Building slowly, over the course of eight-and-a-half minutes, from the church-like solemnity of the organ intro to the soulful feeding frenzy of the of the song’s climax, “Title Song” rates among the band’s very finest moments. The songs present a nice overview of the band’s catalog, the band plays as well as ever, and Chris Robinson is in fine voice and peppers the space between songs with his usual brand of annoying hippie love-child blather, but all is forgiven as soon as he stops speaking and begins singing. Hard to find fault with this set as a stand-alone document. LIVE is a nicely chosen, nicely recorded overview of the band’s career – it’s more like a greatest hits live album than anything else. Still it's a nice album with a good sound.
