COMPLETE ROOTS Series.
Chris and Rich Robinson were schoolchildren in 1972, growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta and still years away from their global success as The Black Crowes. Yet, that period would leave a profound impact on their musicianship, songwriting and overall attitude toward their work. Like many artists of their generation, the Robinsons fell in love with the legends of the '60s and '70s. As kids, their dad would frequently play records by Bob Dylan, Sly Stone, CSN&Y, The Who and Joe Cocker, among others. As the years went on, and they began growing into their own identities, Chris and Rich kept following the trail, listening to albums by the likes of Prince, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys and more, somehow arriving back where they had started. They investigated various music scenes where the music of Dylan, The Byrds, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones brought them full circle to their roots. On 1972, The Crowes once again focused on recording music that was authentic to themselves, honoring influences without sacrificing their style. The songs on 1972 are examples of the kind of music that acted as a vehicle for the creation of Shake Your Money Maker all those years ago. Decades later, the Black Crowes are still unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. Collection containing tracks that inspired the young Robinson brothers before they formed the world-conquering Black Crowes. Chris Robinson was just 23 when The Black Crowes broke big. Weaned on Blues records and turned onto even more by the cavalcade of Rock legends he met, he has eclectic taste and can spin a good bluesy yarn. This collection of music includes many of the recordings Chris enthused about on the clandestine evening when both he and the future Mojo Magazine helmsman Phil Alexander , ended up prostrate on the hotel floor in Newcastle after sampling the local brown ale and discussing their Blues roots till dawn. A collection of twenty mostly blues tracks that either influenced or were covered by The Black Crowes, this set works just fine as an anthology even without The Black Crowes connection. And it isn't all blues, either, with songs like Slim Harpo's wry and very much Excello swamp poppish "I Got Love If You Want It " and Jimmie Rodgers' early country hit "Blue Yodel" also showing up here. Most of this set, though, is comprised of darkly themed vintage country-blues 78s, and tracks like Sleepy John Estes' shaggy dog tale "Rats In My Kitchen", Skip James' haunting and ghostly "Devil Got My Woman" and Son House's surging, head-long "Death Letter Blues" are classics by any definition and influenced a whole lot more folks than just The Black Crowes.
