This is a repack/remaster of the 2010 set which was subtitled Unreleased Recordings 1972-1977 (UNCHBOX01).
Edsel is proud to announce this re-issue in a limited edition 12” x 12” (315 mm x 315 mm x 10 mm) bound book set. This unique collection features new artwork, including rarely seen photos and annotation revised for this 2015 package by Mark Paytress, journalist and author of the definitive Bolan biography. Between 1994 and 1996, Edsel released eight full-length CDs of Marc Bolan’s previously unreleased home demos, alternate takes, unused and abandoned songs, and unfinished recordings. These CDs were deleted in 2001. In late 2010, all eight discs were re-issued in a limited edition deluxe case bound book package. Unavailable since then, these intriguing recordings are now re-packaged for a new legion of Bolan fans. The eight CDs collect 184 Marc Bolan and T. Rex performances, recorded during the 1970s. Some, in a near-finished state, failed to make the final cut. Many others, ranging from spur-of-the-moment home demos to alternate studio takes and jams, were simply abandoned. All were unreleased at the time of Bolan’s death in 1977. This collection of demo tapes recorded in the Spare room of Bolan's London flat is an absolute must have for fans of the Electric Warrior period Bolan. Not only was Bolan prolific in those days, he was great. Some of these tunes are a lot better than those on the Slider or Tanx. Marc is captured here when Eddie Cochran was still an influence and before he decided that he wanted to be a soul singer, and he sounds fabulous, the sense of enjoyment here is wonderful. He was an artist and in 1972 he was on fire. With the 2010 release of this box set now changing hands for substantial sums, Bolan devotees will be overjoyed with this handsome reissue. This time the artwork’s been overhauled, Mark Paytress’ acclaimed sleevenotes updated and the discs packaged in an album-sized book. The discs themselves act as an incredibly thorough chronological look at the music that Bolan left behind during his early 70s purple patch and his latter efforts to recapture the commercial and critical standing of his heyday. It’s interesting to see Bolan feel his way towards songs that are so familiar – Alligator Man sounds like a prototype Jeepster, and any number of off-the-cuff blues jams reveal the genesis of much of Electric Warrior. Those early years make up the bulk of the set but the discs devoted to the wilderness years throw up some surprises. Bolan’s unique worldview remains gloriously odd but he often sounds fraught and damaged, so the likes of Decadent Priestess resemble nothing more than the kind of “outsider art” that would probably earn him a cult following and an all-star tribute album today. Its patchy stuff but anybody even considering diving in will most likely be a fully paid-up fan; for them it’ll be eight discs of Solid Gold Easy Action.
