This 2-disc compilation of Mountain (much of it live) featuring one of the foremost guitarists (Leslie West) of his generation, or any other for that matter, is sure to please. The band seemingly was built for live performance, but also shined and was equally adept in the studio as well. They were at a zenith, regardless, during the very late 60's thru early 70's and they could (when live) really 'rock' the house - or yard - as the case may be... remember Woodstock '69? They have produced many fine albums, and this one certainly is a fitting tribute to a very fine band. Listen for yourself, and think that you will agree! If you like West and Mountain you're in for a treat. A must have for Leslie and Mountain old and future fans! Deliberately bootleg-styled packaging and a lack of songwriting and publishing credits give this artefact some kind of “edgy” status. The key tracks in the career of Leslie Weinstein, better known as Leslie West, and his band Mountain, are present in this 34-song selection – but, apart from two archive cuts from first garage band The Vagrants, they aren’t likely to be the versions fans are most familiar with. Vagrants aside, Disc One comprises live Mountain performances from the 70s, already released on the Voiceprint Bootleg Series of albums, while the second leans heavily on decades-apart solo studio LPs The Great Fatsby (1975) and Guitarded (2005), both of which are respectable efforts. Alongside live versions of classics such as ''Mississippi Queen'' and ''Nantucket Sleighride'', we get covers of Procol Harum ''Really Got Me''), Free (''The Stealer'' – an uncredited studio duet from 1986 with Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde) and others. Mountain fans may find certain specialist items of interest, and the sleevenotes offer a neat pocket history, but the uncommitted would be better off looking for a Sony best-of collection or picking up the 5CD Original Album Classics set.
NOTE: Disc 2, selection #6 (Little Bit Of Love) is missing. So, in actuality there are 19 songs on that disc, rather than 20 - not a big deal, just an intriguing (albeit rare) production glitch.
