Mountain- LIVE IN TEXAS 2005- CD- 2006- Voiceprint Production- 604388325320- 400 grn
Mountain were in many ways the American answer to Cream. They formed in 1969 after the breakup of Cream and for many years followed the path of the power trio centered around the outstanding talents of guitarist Leslie West. Over the next few decades, they continued to tour and record extensively. This collection, recorded in Texas in 2005, features many of their stage favorites as well as a nod to Cream with "Politician" and "Sunshine Of Your Love." For long time Mountain fans, this live CD will be a welcome addition to their collections. For the newer fan, this CD will work as a fine introduction to this legendary American Rock band. Mountain became one of the first generation of blues-based power-rockers with their Cream-influenced amalgam of chunky guitar riffs and extended keyboard solos. This 2005 concert captures a sem-reunited Mountain (with original members Leslie West and Corky Laing joined by bassist Ritchie Scarlet) performing a career-spanning selection of songs that includes live renditions of classics like the sexed-up anthem "Mississippi Queen," the psychedelic ballad "Nantucket Sleighride," the fierce heavy-metal rocker "Never In My Life," and the melodic, Jack Bruce-penned "Theme For An Imaginary Western." Live performances were where Mountain always shone, and this document of some of their concert fare shows how they took a rather ordinary song and expanded it with lots of jamming and improvising. The side-long (on vinyl) "Nantucket Sleighride" does show signs of the excess that would plague the band for the rest of its career. A fair example of Mountain live.
