If you're looking for a great way to get your hands on some of the Mountain Bootleg Series discs, here's where you want to start. This two-disc set, titled THEME FOR (not "From") AN IMAGINARY WESTERN, is actually a German import that combines the first two volumes in Mountain's Bootleg Series. So you get the 1971 concert in San Bernardino (nearly 77 minutes of Mountain in their original incarnation) on disc one, and nearly 61 minutes of music on disc two, recorded in 1997 at the 2000 capacity Shepherds Bush Empire Theatre near London, and featuring a guest appearance by John Entwistle, who grew up along with the other members of The Who in the Shepherds Bush area.
COMPILATION INCLUDES:
CD1- Live In San Bernadino 1971;
CD2- Live In Shepherds Bush 1997.
Of course, favorite among these two discs is the 1971 concert, which consider to be from the classic era in rock history. Even though the Shepherds Bush performance may be recorded on better equipment, the freshness and vitality of the performances from 1971 cannot be denied. The discs come handsomely packaged in a slick and shiny digipak, but there isn't a whole lot of useful information to be had inside. There are no photo's of the band, and no information on the players. The twelve page booklet that is included repeats the liner notes in English and German, and only provides an outlined history of the band rather than background on the particular recordings offered here. Must say, however, that what you do get is a whole lot more than use to get with the boots that showed up in my mailbox in the 1970's! If you enjoy Mountain and can tolerate less than pristine (okay, much less than pristine) quality in your listening fare, give THEME FOR AN IMAGINARY WESTERN a go.
