The Fillmore East opened in Manhattan in March 1968. Over the next three years it hosted almost every major rock artist of the era, as well as giants of soul, blues, folk, gospel and jazz. Bill Graham decided to close it in June 1971, but before doing so he assembled a remarkable 3-day bill featuring some of the most iconic and influential acts in America, spanning pop (the Beach Boys), blues (Albert King), rock'n'roll (the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter, Mountain, the Allman Brothers Band) and folk (Country Joe McDonald - a nod towards the venue's psychedelic roots). Born Wolodia Grajonca to Russian parents in Berlin in 1931, Bill Graham was one of the pioneers of mass event entrepreneurship in the USA. While former showmen with dubious backgrounds made their way into the record industry, good old Bill was one of the first to consider the rock show in its technical dimension, and to rationalize it by transforming an old skating rink San Francisco in concert hall. The success of the Fillmore Auditorium (opened in mid-1965) largely contributed to the emergence and impact of the west-coast scene of the age of Aquarius. In 1968, its equivalent opened in New York (logically called Fillmore East). After a quarter of a decade criss-crossing the USA from side to side to manage his two establishments head-on (not to mention Santana's career, which he managed at the start), our Wolodia-Bill had a big burn-out, and decided that no, really, the turn that show biz was taking (on spans that he had nevertheless helped to design) no longer suited him. The Fillmore-West hit by requisition and promised to be demolished, he decided to also close his New York offshoot, the Fillmore East. But to come out on top (as politicians say when they feel cornered), he programmed three evenings of anthology there, with seven of the major groups that marked the history of these places. It is all of these concerts that this quadruple CD reproduces, with (hang on!) nothing less than Albert King, the J.Geils Band, Edgar Winter, Mountain, the Beach Boys, Country Joe McDonald and the Allman Brothers Band. Recorded and retransmitted at the time by the radio station WNEW-FM, these shows unfortunately do not all benefit from the same sound quality. On the final night, June 27, 1971, the Allman Brothers literally set the stage on fire (carnivorous versions of “Whipping Post”, “Hot ‘Lanta” and “You Don’t Love Me”). Only one title of this performance had since emerged (“One Way Out”, on “The Fillmore Concerts”, the other tracks of which came from one of their previous passages, in March of the same year). An unexpected and essential complement to the famous “Live At Fillmore East” which propelled them to worldwide success, the recording of their funeral oration for the hall which revealed them to the greatest number counts among the peaks of this gang which then multiplied them at will Bill Graham, Duane and Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Albert King and even Jay Geils having since left us, this box celebrates with panache a time when music was played without the help of computers, and where feeling and interplay were the only rules that the musicians imposed on themselves. Almost five decades later, that heart is still beating just as strong. Do yourself a favor, embark on this space-time journey. You might shed a tear or two, but it will be more happiness than nostalgia.
