The legendary Robert Johnson stood at the CROSSROADS of American music. He became the first modern bluesman, evolving the Country Blues of the Mississippi Delta during the 1930s. Johnson's life came to a premature and mysterious end in 1938, at the age of 27. By the late 1950s he had become something of a mythical figure. Booker T. Washington "Bukka" White (born on November 12, between 1900 and 1909; died February 26, 1977) was an American Delta Blues guitarist and singer. Bukka White was born on a farm south of Houston, in northeastern Mississippi. Bukka is a phonetic spelling of White's first name. His father John White was a railroad worker, and also a musician who performed locally, primarily playing the fiddle, but also mandolin, guitar and piano. He gave Booker a guitar for his ninth birthday. Robert Petway (born c. 1903, date of death unknown) was an American blues singer and guitarist. He recorded only 16 songs, but it has been said that he was an influence on many notable blues and rock musicians. Tommy McClennan (January 4, 1905 – May 9, 1961) was an American Delta Blues singer and guitarist. McClennan was born in Durant, Mississippi, and grew up in the town. He played and sang Blues in a rough, energetic style. David "Honeyboy" Edwards (June 28, 1915 – August 29, 2011) was a Delta blues guitarist and singer from Mississippi. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi. He learned to play music from his father, a guitarist and violinist. At the age of 14, he left home, beginning life as an itinerant musician. He performed with the famed Blues musician Robert Johnson, with whom he developed a close friendship. Edwards was present on the night Johnson drank the poisoned whiskey that killed him, and his story has become the definitive version of Johnson's demise. Mississippian Otto Virgial recorded two single 78s in Chicago for Bluebird Records on Halloween in 1925, "Little Girl In Rome"/"Bad Notion Blues" and "Got The Blues About Rome"/"Seven Year Itch." Those relatively measured vocals and some competently ragged guitar playing in a late Delta style, appear to be Virgial's complete recorded output. Robert Lockwood Jr. (March 27, 1915 – November 21, 2006) was an American Delta Blues guitarist, who recorded for Chess Records and other Chicago labels in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the only guitarist to have learned to play directly from Robert Johnson.
