ZZ Top- VIVA LAS VEGAS- CD- 1997- Euro Sound/Falcon Neue Medien/Global Arts Production- 4013659033158- 400 grn
German pressing 1997 compilation. Yes, many would consider this an Elvis song… which it was originally, of course. But given the recent passing of ZZ Top’s bass player, Dusty Hill, who also recorded a barnstorming version of the song, it seemed more appropriate to give ZZ Top’s version an airing in his memory. (Don’t worry, Elvis is linked below in case you can’t listen to this song without your fix of The King.) ZZ Top are one of favourite bands of all time, largely because they take a very simple set up… just three guys together, without backing singers, gospel choirs or fireworks in tow… and play such infectious Texas-flavoured blues that you can’t help but admire their musicianship. At least, that is, since the 1980s when the videos for their hit records like “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man” were all over MTV. Although those videos earned them the international breakthrough fame their talents deserved, they came with a bit of a downside too, as it made some people think ZZ Top were more of a novelty act than a serious band. “Viva Las Vegas” is also a bit of a ZZ Top oddity. Mostly, lead guitarist… well, only guitarist, really, suppose… Billy Gibbons takes the lead vocals. But on “Viva Las Vegas” it’s the late Dusty Hill’s voice you hear. That’s not to take anything away from the great Billy Gibbons… one of the finest guitar players ever to walk the earth. It just always seemed like an unusual way to organise things, that’s all. “Viva Las Vegas” was written by two of popular music’s finest songwriters — Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. Even though the end result sounds on the surface like a glitzy advertisement for achieving your dreams through games of chance, there is a darker undercurrent to the song too… it’s also partially a warning about the downsides of living your live hooked on the fleeting, passing thrills of a superficial, transient place like Las Vegas. ZZ Top did slightly better in the UK when they released their cover in 1992, with a UK Top 10 showing, albeit their version barely registered in the US charts. That hardly mattered though, because “Viva Las Vegas” became one of the barnstorming performances at ZZ Top concerts. It developed into an iconic part of the band’s repertoire and fans still have a great affection for it. Probably even more now than they used to, as it’s the song most of us will think of first when we remember the contribution of the late Dusty Hill to one of the finest bands in popular music. A “little ol’ band from Texas” who played together, just the three of them, for over 50 years, making great music that inspired so many people around the world.
Rest in peace, Dusty. For now, here he is at full throttle for ZZ Top’s high-octane version of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman’s classic song “Viva Las Vegas”…
